Cover songs

Fri Sep 22, 2017 10:52 am

Mostly I don't like covers, but there are some remarkable exceptions.

Like this one <<Disturbed - The Sound Of Silence>>:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9Dg-g7t2l4

Or this <<triggerfinger - Follow rivers>>:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzWQV5OiQQQ

And this <<Walk off the Earth - Somebody That I Used to Know>>:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9NF2edxy-M

Any you like?

Too lazy to post links, but:

Faith No More - "War Pigs" (Black Sabbath)
Metallica - "Stone Cold Crazy" (Queen)
Sepultura - "The Hunt" (New Model Army)

Also, Heart does some great covers live. Lots of Zeppelin and my favorite, the Who's "Love, Reign O'er Me".

Also, 311 did a real nice job of covering "Love Song" (The Cure).

I hadn't seem these. They were Phenomenal. I could have done without the triggerfinger. Perhaps since I didn't know the original.

I always like this one The video and the music are both great works building upon NIN original.

The absolute best cover song of all time--Vanilla Fudge's rendition of the Supremes "You Keep Me Hanging On". They sound nothing alike, but I really like both of them.

There's the Scissor Sisters cover of Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb." I could write a long description for this one but I'll just leave it at saying they transformed Pink Floyd's all-time famous juggernaut into a disturbingly credible midtempo nu-disco track:

Scissor Sisters - Comfortably Numb: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKQEbhf0PwE

Okay, enough covers, time to break the rules of the thread! :bouncy: :stirthepot: :duck:

I don't think a rendition of a traditional song is a cover, exactly, but The Be Good Tanyas' take on "The Coo Coo Bird" is unexpected and darkly bewitching. Neko Case taught me that a banjo could be sinister, The Be Good Tanyas taught me a fiddle could be transdimensional, and both taught me that women are *real* good at conjuring up sounds that make me remember being a kid and watching the inevitability of an approaching prairie thunderstorm. Call it midwestern gothic?

The Be Good Tanyas - The Coo Coo Bird: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-roAKCSZ6Z8

...and for shiggles, here's Neko Case with that sinister banjo (and a DC-9 or descendant of such visible on the album cover):

Neko Case - Things That Scare Me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBLI9jq6tUY

A big favorite for a while has been Wye Oak's live session cover of "Running Up That Hill" by Kate Bush. You may remember that Wye Oak had a smash that was featured in an episode of The Walking Dead. They're a duo from Baltimore, people might balk at calling them indie now because they had a couple radio hits, but they still play tons of small venues and really are regular-ass people. If you heard their music first and found out there's a duo after, you might be blown away because they sound so much *bigger.* They weave rock soundscapes that are by turns brooding, full-throated, aggressive, eventually dissolving into shoegazey static at the peaks. The Kate Bush cover was performed for The A.V. Club, who deleted the video, so this is a re-upload.

Wye Oak - Running Up That Hill (The A.V. Club session): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lyVQrsXXSW8

And some Bonus Wye Oak tracks here, an acoustic rendition (Jenn only, no drums) of their smash "Civilian," and for fans or if you fancy darker and more brooding (and more electric), their rendition of "Plains" for KEXP at the Triple Door in Seattle.

Wye Oak - Civilian (Hauskonzerte session): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5B4KS7GP9A
Wye Oak - Plains (KEXP Triple Door Session): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4lpjEpHjC3o

And finally, not a cover but a remix: Kruder & Dorfmeister's take of Lamb's "Trans Fatty Acid," from their remix double album The K&D Sessions. In the original, K&D heard a strange juxtaposition of hopeful lyrics with a relentless crunching drum and bass line and a slowly building barrage of parking-garage-esque buzzy synths. From it they pulled a knockout performance from a lounge singer gone big time, heavy still on the drums and bass, jazzy, rich, even atmospheric at times... and in a busy venue with a dining area.

You'll like the remix better but it's worth a listen to the original to see just how radical the remix truly is.

Lamb - Trans Fatty Acid - K&D Sessions remix - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYnrtGCgsM8
Lamb - Trans Fatty Acid - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRF80TuHhVk

Enjoy!

WORST:
Limp Bizcuit's cover of George Michael's 'Faith'....

99 Red Balloons by Goldfinger
Fantasy by Black Box featuring Martha Wash
All Out Of Love by Soluna
Holding Out For A Hero by Emery
No More Tears (Enough Is Enough) by kd lang and Andy Bell

Did Eric Johnson ever do a cover of "Along The Watchtower"? I went to a Joe Satriani concert in Portland one time. There was an opening act who used a foot recorder and kept laying riff after riff to play "Watchtower" by himself. It was pretty cool.

A couple great covers of Eddie Cochran songs:
Summertime Blues - The Who
C'Mon Everybody - Humble Pie

Also like Judas Priest's version of Joan Baez' Diamonds and Rust on their live album

One of my real Favorites - "America" by Yes - a cover of one of Paul Simon's great tunes

Probably the best ever is Jimi Hendrix' version of All Along the Watchtower. Dave Mason's take on it was pretty good as well.
A lot of artists have covered other Bob Dylan songs over the years, some that come immediately to mind
Blowin' in the Wind - Peter, Paul and Mary
Knockin' on Heaven's Door - both Gun 'N' Roses and Eric Clapton

woops I had it round the wrong way Bowie wrote it, Mott released it in 72 and he started playing it live in 73. Odd to think Bowie was covering his own song.

Tron was written by a band called Ednaswap, first released in Danish by Lis Sørensen in 93, then by Ednaswap in 95, again by Norwegian Trine Rein in 96 and finally the version that everyone outside Northern Europe knows in 97 by Natalie Imbruglia.

I also despise people covering Queen, with two exceptions Metellica Stone Cold Crazy and George Michael Somebody to Love. George would have been a much better stand in singer for Queen than Adam Lambert.

Hmmm, I often think there are songs for which cover versions should be prohibited, e.g. by the national government, by the UN or whatsoever... IMHO, this song belongs to this group of songs. :-)

Then again, when I started listening to music I hated all stuff from the 70ies because at that time I considered it as Hippie Music. So the first time I heard Stairway to Heaven was actually the Version of Far Corporation. I said to a friend "wow, great song" and he (who died later because of drugs....) responded "If you like this song you should hear the original".

Problem is now, I head it too often and can't hear it anymore.... kind of a luxury problem, I admit.

Disturbed are great at throwing cover versions in on their albums.

One that has not been mentioned is Australian Pink Floyd. They actually tour year round (it seems year round anyway) doing their tribute to Pink Floyd. I have seen them numerous times and they just keep getting better. They are that well liked that they were given the original stage sets used by Floyd after playing at a Birthday party for Dave Gilmour. Having seen Pink Floyd at Knebworth (way back when) the chance to see the next best thing is not something to be sneezed at.
