RIP Edith Windsor

Thu Sep 14, 2017 5:46 am

Edith Windsor, the plaintiff in US v. Windsor, which obliterated DOMA.

She fought so that her legal suppose (Thea) could get healthcare under her name.

Though Thea died from illness, Edith kept fighting well into her 80s, and eventually won when the Supreme Court upheld her case.

It was the most powerful victory for American gay rights on the national level, until Obergefell v. Hodges granted nationwide marriage rights.

Edith just died last night. RIP. :crying:

United with Thea again...

I'm sad to see this has been up for six hours without a single response. Terrible news, but her legacy will live on because her fight to ensure that she could obtain healthcare for her wife changed the lives of all LGBT people for the better.

As am I, but it's got views, so I guess that's what counts.
Needs to be seen: she's basically the gay Rosa Parks.

She was in her late 80s, so not sure I'd call it terrible; she put in a great run, and will be immortalized for her role in civil rights.

Rest in peace my love. Life is often onerous for those who are trailblazers. Yet, every single one inspires me as an outspoken person on human rights. I just got back to an internet connection after three weeks of R&R.

Sad news but, as you said, she was in her eighties. The important thing is that her legacy should not be forgotten, particularly as what she accomplished - a slice of the equality pie - is still denied to millions of LGBT folks around the world. I personally benefited from the end of DOMA; my gratitude to her is genuine.

I am fortunate to have met Edie a few times. I live in NYC and she lived here too so I met her at various LGBT events. I was amazed by Edie's energy and spunk for someone who's in her 80's. Rest in peace.
