Aviation billionaires?

Wed Sep 13, 2017 2:14 pm

I came across this article recently, according to which SG CEO is on his way to become the 7th Aviation billionaire (i.e., who have most of their income coming from aviation related business), and all the other 6 belong to Asia only.
Is this really true? Are there no such aviation billionaires in West?

Richard Branson (Virgin Group) is certainly up there and he's not Asian. It's estimated he owns about 5 billion.

Michael O'Leary (Ryanair) might also be a billionaire, but I'm not sure about that.

Well, Neeleman would probably be topping a billion as well.
Then in Europe you have Stelios Haji the EasyJet shareholder, Hidalgo of Globalia Group (Air Europa), in LATIN America you have German Eframovich and Kriete family of Avianca, Kriete also owns a big chunk of Mexican Volaris.

Yeah, but how much of that profit is from aviation? He owns plenty of stuff outside of aviation.

David Neeleman is not on the billionaires list. He's not close.
if assumptions could fly, airliners.net would be the world's busiest airport

Aviation Billionaire = oxymoron.

As Billionaire Warren Buffet once stated (paraphrasing his quote) "The only way to make a fortune in the airline business is to start with a massive fortune"

Or "How do you become a millionaire? Have a billion dollars then start an airline."

Generally speaking aviation (as a corporate activity) is the lowest paid for-profit sector there is. Until recently, the worst paid CEOs in the Fortune 500 were all airline CEOs. Worst out of 500.

As others have noted, it is subject to massive volatility and near total domination by labor. Airlines (or OEM) are not likely places to become a billionaire. Software, finance, oil, merchandizing and real estate are more likely ways.

VS isn't worth that much; Delta only paid about $250m for their just under half share.

At its peak value SQ paid about twice that so VS itself barely made the $1bn valuation and is worth less nowadays.

Virgin Group does own some other stock, such as a quiet chunk of Air Asia they have held for some time now.

Much of Virgin Atlantic's value is tied up in LHR slots. The fleet itself is mostly leased.

I wouldn't say RB gets a huge amount from
Aviation anymore. Its the main thing what helped him become who he is today along with Virgin records, but with Virgin America pretty much toast and VS now pretty much owned by Sky team it won't be one of his core earners in the future. He's probably getting Virgin australia branding rights too.

Natrually, he would of done alright out of selling up also.
