What color outdoor light bulbs for Thanksgiving? (Part 2, 2017)

Mon Sep 11, 2017 2:27 am

A year ago, I did the same thread, and last year, I did a red and orange combination. At the time, I didn't have any yellow bulbs. I bought yellow bulbs earlier this year for Easter and used them in combination with pink bulbs.

Yesterday, I put up our black and orange bulbs for Halloween. After Halloween, I plan to do lights for Thanksgiving as I did last year. Now that I have yellow bulbs as an option, I am considering one of the following four color combinations:

  • Red and Orange (same as 2016)
  • Red and Yellow
  • Orange and Yellow
  • All three colors

Which do you think I should do?

Note that I would prefer to include at least one red bulb, since one of the bulbs would be located in an overhead can light that I would need a ladder to swap. In that fixture I would like to put a red bulb for I can keep it for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Valentine's Day, that way I don't have to climb up there for each holiday.

Right now I am leaning towards the three-color combination of red, orange, and yellow.

How hard can it be to get a ladder out?

To be fair, it must be quite hard to climb a ladder dressed in pink and carrying a chihuahua. :wink2:

It isn't that hard, but I would still prefer to do it as few times as possible. For Thanksgiving I will do it to remove the black Halloween bulb, and will do it again after Valentine's Day to remove the red bulb, as well as after Easter to remove the yellow bulb and go back to the normal white bulb.

Wouldn't the red bulb turn your home into a whorehouse (cue the Police "Roxanne")

This! Assuming fall isn't completely played out by Thanksgiving where you are, anyway. You might have to play with the relative proportions of the colors though to see what looks best... 50% orange, 25% red, 25% yellow?

That might not be a bad idea. Put orange in the courtyard and the right side of the garage, red in the can light, and yellow on the left side of the garage.

Oh are these not string lights? That's what I was imagining for some reason. Hmm.

We tried string icicle lights on the front of our house for one holiday season; it looked awful. Instead we put them on the fence of our backyard.

Call an electrician and install in colour changing LED bulbs.

Ah, I rather unjustifiably assumed C7 strings for some reason. Clear red/orange/yellow C7s would look cool in the right kind of fall display.
