India army chief: we must prepare for simultaneous war with China and Pakistan

Well China will not be happy, the possiblity of NK imploding and the refugee exidos. Pakistan and India have been at it for ages so no change there.
His comments came a day after India’s prime minister, Narendra Modi, and China’s president, Xi Jinping, agreed on a “forward-looking” approach to Sino-India ties, putting behind the Doklam standoff.

Realy? An army officer should not make these kinds of sensitive remarks.

What's so sensitive about it? As a country with two hostile nuclear armed neighbors, the last thing India needs is to be ill prepared. Governments come and go, but the army chief needs to make sure his force is prepared for the possibility.

India is one of the four strategic leaders of the future world. China, India, Europe and the US/Canada. Russia not among them. It is foreseeable that India needs total deterrence and a global reach.

Sure he needs to be prepared, let him do that. What his job description doesn't mention is - as we say in Dutch - pouring oil on fire.

1. Don't let Putin hear that ;)
2. India is potentially exactly that, but they are not there yet.

This is no more than an army general looking for more funding. Who needs hospitals and roads when the boogie monster is invading.

I don't think so.

"Jarnail saheb" Rawat is an ass! And that too an ass with a bigger mouth than Dear Leader! Enough said!

This is the same guy who made grandiose comments about "Indian being capable of fighting a 2.5 front war" only to withdraw Indian troops from Doklam in what was in effect a shameful surrender.

With incompetent nincompoops like these in charge, there is no way India can even fight a one-front war with Bangladesh.

China will never start a war with India. China will flex muscles now and again.

India will never start a war with China.

I never understood why China retreated after kicking India’s ass in 1962.

To what purpose should they have gone forward?

Perhaps they did not appreciate the bonus of a small land grab at the time.

Tibet does not count.

China did not retreat. It unilaterally declared a ceasefire after achieving its objectives. Its like smashing your opponents nose and leaving instead of staying on to dismember him!

The Chinese have always been driven by objectives. In 1962, China was driven by its objective of securing the Aksai Chin area and reversing the cartographic changes made by the British in the Ladakh sector post 1910. Possession of Aksai Chin gave them a strategic advantage: the road connecting Tibet to the Northern areas and later Pakistan via the Karakoram pass runs through this area. They have since built well supplied air bases and strengthened their hold in this sector. Possession of all of Ladakh would not give them any more advantage vis-a-vis the cost of acquiring them. So in that sense, barring the withdrawal of the Chinese in the Southern parts of the Ladakh sector (like Chushul), it makes perfect sense. In case of another conflict, the Chinese would focus in this sector would be on securing the whole of the Changthang Plateau centred around Chushul and no further.

The secondary objective of giving India a bloody nose and irreparably destroying India's growing stature as a world power was also achieved. So in that sense, the Chinese achieved everything they wanted in the 1962 war. And more.

Tibet does not count.

Aksai Chin in the Ladakh sector WAS a land grab. Nominally a part of India courtesy the cartographic aggression of its former British rulers, the Chinese nevertheless did take back the land they owned prior to 1910.
