UK ready to pay up to 40 billion euros to leave EU

Sun Aug 06, 2017 9:04 am

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain is prepared to pay up to 40 billion euros ($47 billion) as part of a deal to leave the European Union, the Sunday Telegraph newspaper reported, citing three unnamed sources familiar with Britain's negotiating strategy.

The European Union has floated a figure of 60 billion euros and wants significant progress on settling Britain's liabilities before talks can start on complex issues such as future trading arrangements.

How convenient, allows them to meet in the middle for 50. Enough to fund a swathe of french cheese farmers for a year or two, I suppose.

But it's peanuts compared to the exodus risk facing the City.

I'm surprised they're ready to offer that much that soon... It might show eagerness to move on to trading agreements which is where the UK stands to lose the most.

Does this mean we can get what we ask for now?

Hopefully, we can indeed move on to a more constructive way forward. Although this is only one of the three outstanding issue before we can move on to our future relationship.

Huge mistake by May. This move is like surrendering to the EU. From now on the British position will be weak. So sad.

The British position was weak, to begin with. So nothing has changed, or they might loosen their hard stand so we can find a solution which will minimize the damage on both sides.

At the weekend, the Sunday Telegraph claimed UK negotiators are now prepared to pay up to £36bn to the EU to settle the so-called Brexit divorce bill.
A senior government source told the Press Association agency that "no such figure has been agreed".
Conservative MP Peter Bone said it would be "totally bizarre" for the UK to give the EU any money, let alone £36bn, adding that such a fee was unlikely to get through Parliament.
Another Eurosceptic MP, Jacob Rees-Mogg, said there was "no logic" to the figure that was being reported.
