YTZ Removes ad That was Insulting to cows

Fri Jun 30, 2017 7:38 pm

Today is Canada's 150th birthday. We have solved all of our issues and this is what we're now dealing with. We have a national satire crisis where when we read a news headline we can no longer distinguish news from satire.

I THINK this is NOT satire.

I shake my head in amazement at some of the nutbars in our country.

For some reason I'm now feeling a craving to tuck into a nice medium-rare rib steak...

It seems like these days no matter what you say, someone will complain and get offended.

It's a daily newspaper in Halifax, NS, not satire. The content of the article is still ridiculous though...

OH, FOR GOODNESS' SAKES! W-a-a-y back in the day, when SkyVoice was a boy tenor, my family & I visited Expo 67 in Montreal. It was quite an undertaking, but I largely enjoyed our visit. NOW, fast-forward to the present. I've mentioned to my wife that we should visit Canada, that we might really enjoy going there. She, however, has always been cool to the idea.

Then, I read this article. Maybe I should listen to my wife, eh?

I can see it now. This group of wackos will start an ad campaign in the US imploring Americans to stop referring to back bacon as "Canadian bacon" as the term is offensive to pigs that are not from Canada.

There are wackos in Canada just like there are wackos in the US. Unfortunately one of the negative aspects of our modern world and social media/the internet is the minority have a much louder voice.

In truth it's farmers that should feel insulted, the ad is implying that they treat their cattle badly.

To stop eating them would be cultural appropriation.

From the article:

Activist Len Goldberg says in a Facebook post that message is "insulting" to cows.

Let's be clear, this is not insulting to cows, it is insulting to Len Goldberg and his ilk.

It's also very insulting for those of us who farm cows. Whilst treating cows like shit (holding them in feedlots, feeding them nothing but grain, beating them etc) is the way of life in some parts of the world, in the better parts of the planet we treat the bovine creatures entrusted to us with respect and care. The notion that there's nothing wrong treating cows badly has got to stop. The ad is demeaning. It implies that the farming community doesn't care about their animals and that they are expendable. Cows are one of natures finest creatures. After-all if it wasn't for cows, there wouldn't be much milk. And if there wasn't much milk, there wouldn't be much cheese. And if there wasn't much cheese, the world would be an awful, awful place. Steak is bloody good also.

"You're Precious Cargo, Not Cattle" makes no reference to cows.

A perfectly good usage and definition of the word "cattle" given by my Webster's is: human beings esp. en masse. It is, of course, a secondary definition.

The intent of the advert (in my opinion, anyway) was to proclaim "You will be given the royal treatment here, and not as one from the unwashed masses".

Or................try your own hand at equivalent expression.

Militant veganism. This is so insane. I understand respecting animals, and treating them "humanely." But where does this stop? Should I respect mosquitoes? Should I just watch while they suck my blood, and then fly off to lay their eggs somewhere?

To say that the ad is insulting to cows is just madness. Cows can't read, nor understand human speech. Thus, how could they POSSIBLY be insulted? I think these people are confused about the definition of humane. To treat something in a humane manner is to "have or show compassion or benevolence." Sure, it's reasonable to say that animals deserve humane treatment, but that doesn't mean we have to treat them as if they are human.

Humane treatment ≠ human treatment!

While I can understand not wanting to bother with fighting these activists, I'm still disappointed that the airport authority caved in to their demands.

Beef farmer Jay is sending his cows to a sanctuary and starting a #vegan farm instead.

They should have left it up until an actual cow complained, not just some butt-hurt, tree-huggers who think they're representing cows.

I honestly can't help thinking that this is some kind of April Fool's. Maybe a summer version?

So ok another link has been provided, but could we really be sure that this is a true story, rather than fake news?

It does appear that Len Goldberg exists and he is an animal rights activist. I support animal rights and welfare and am against the fur trade, but if true this is just ludicrous.

Amen.

I guess everyone should jump down WNs throats for their ad saying the other airlines do 'cattle call' boring and has a bunch of people in cow costumes running down a jet bridge.

On a somewhat related, bigger picture, note, I really hate when peoplease honestly believe animals should be treated better than humans.
