Cat Problems

Mon Jun 19, 2017 5:29 am

We have been on vacation for the past two weeks, touring the Pacific Northwest. It was nice.

The problem is our 7 year old cat. She is fixed. She seems to have been "marking" since the brosband got a puppy. Rio is nearly a year old and the cat is still not happy. We went away for two weeks and found our bed had been "marked" by the cat. We need this to stop. It seems to have started when the puppy came along and only happens to his stuff. Any suggestions short of getting rid of the cat?

Your cat is stressed out, she has had "her" territory invaded by the puppy, there are a couple of things you can do.

Make sure she has plenty of high spots she can get to, I have floating bookshelves dotted around the house so when our dogs are being to playful the cats can head up out of their way.

Give her her own space, stick a baby gate at the door of one of the rooms so only she can get in.

Did you allow proper time for both to be introduced (as in slowly allow them to interact)? Remember, it was the cat's territory. Maybe it's her way to not only relieve stress, but mark territory.

Other than that, jetwet1's suggestions are what I would say as well though this may sometimes not work if your cat is curious or if the puppy is playful. My cat has towers and when a friend brought over a puppy, he'd watch from the tower, but step down to "inspect". As soon as the puppy turned towards him to play, he'd hiss, paw at him, and jump back to the tower to start the cycle all over.

Make sure the litter pan is in a private spot where the puppy can not bother the cat when it is trying to do its business. Also make sure that the puppy can not mark the litter at all. The cat will not be comfortable going in the pan of it has been marked by the dog.

Also a very good idea.

Just sounds like insecurity to me as well. Cats are predators who are natural loners when adults. Neutered cats are even more territorial too as they don't have the roaming instinct. No need to find quick and dirty sex (!) so she will want to keep her territory marked out and uninvaded. Giving her plenty of love, and a nice private place to do her business, should settle her back down into the space that's hers and in which you are her guests and servants....
