It's scary because if she hadn't been busted, an innocent life could have been affected. Aren't there many cases of men being jailed because of rape accusations, only to be released later on the account that the rape victim had been discredited?

Soon enough we will all be wearing some kind of device on our nether parts to record use and prove our innocence or help catch our rapist.

She may be a despicable individual, but statistics show 1 in 5 college going women are sexually assaulted. There are more cases of a coverup than occasional false report, particularly when sports teams are involved.

Happens very frequently. particularly in U.S. college settings. If you are a U.S. college student and simply do not like anyone, all you need to do is accuse them of rape - even if they are cleared by the police / DA of any wrongdoing, the students will have basically no right to defend themselves in college disciplinary hearings and will have their lives ruined.

Not sure about situation in the US but I was told that in Japan there are sex assault suspect being forced to suicide due to social pressure even after they are proved innocent in the court.

There was a recent case at Michigan State University over an incident that didn't happen on campus or while the school was in session. The police and prosecutor did not find any criminal wrong doing, but MSU threw the guy out of school and required him to register as a sex offender. The article was in the Detroit Free Press. I can't figure out how a school can force somebody to register as a sex offender, but not be convicted of a crime. I forget the particulars of the case, but it was something like this. A man and woman were involved in a consensual sexual relationship and broke up. He later made sexual advances off campus during summer break. She said no and he stopped. The woman is now transgendered and filed a complaint with MSU a year later because she said she was afraid to run into him in the men's room on campus.

Making stuff up isn't new and happens for all kinds of reasons. Last fall a Muslim woman at University of Michigan claimed she was harassed by some white men, shouting pro Trump slogans, who ripped off her hijab. This story was all over the news. After reviewing security camera footage from the location she reported police found nothing. She recanted the story and said she made it all up.

The way they went after Rolling Stone magazine and alleged victim, no victim or media outlet will dare to cover sexual assault stories. IMHO, Tables were turned on a technicality and Rolling Stone was persecuted.

Unfortunately there are people out like that. Just look at what happened to Michael Jackson, his life was basically destroyed by lurid and false allegations. At least with him there was a lot of money to get; this evil woman seems to have done it out of spite alone. There's a reason why many men are hesitant to step in an elevator alone with a woman. Once the allegation is out there, it doesn't matter if you can prove you didn't do it. It sticks.

The article doesn't say that she named or identified an assailant.

But even is she had done so, the police quickly determined that she was lying about an event that didn't happen.

There was nothing at all scary (according to the information at hand).

We can fill the forum with minor news or non-news stories. But why do so?

No, it's much worse than just that. They ran with it roughly knowing what could happen if they were wrong. But no news agency wants to be on record as the only one to doubt a victim's story. The potential for liability there is very real and coupled with the need to be current and avoid missing coverage, that was the only realistic outcome.

No doubt they fucked up. But this is much more like a flock of birds following itself around than the biases of any one individual.

I read the article and raised more questions than it answers. How did the guy get convicted based on one person's uncorroborated testimony?

And also there's really no not saying this - who would have sex of any kind with that 800 pound woman?

I think she might had some mental problem...other than what else she got from this serious allegation. But these kind of issues might be seriously affect some innocent peoples in many instances....this is really disgusting for the rest of women.

All three things can be true:

- The claimed 1-in-5 college women are sexually assaulted is a highly inflated figure.

- Some university administrations are totally willing to sweep sexual assaults under the rug because they are embarrassing to the university, particularly when university staff or organizations are involved (see: Baylor, Penn State, etc.)

- Some university administrations are totally willing to forgo due process and levy draconian punishments on young people accused of committing a sexual assault (see: Duke, UTA, etc.)

Some here that show outrage at the media don't seem bothered when it's a "brown thug" that is accused of something...

I fail to understand why you think South Africans are more apt to commit sexual offenses than are Americans.

Educated liberals? Hardly. College freshman are not yet highly educated (many are not even well educated) and most sexual assaults occur during August-November of the student's first academic year.

Please accept that I understand that good comparative statistics are very difficult to come by, and that a huge amount of rape and sexual assaults go unreported in both the United States and South Africa. I also do not mean to imply that the United States or any other country deserves the title of "rape capital of the world".

But, so far as I have been able to determine, the number of rapes per capita, reported to the police, are quite similar in the two countries. I base this statement on data provided by these two sources, which just happened to pop up at the top of Google searches:
