Another outbreak of Ebola. Still small and the response seems fast, so hopefully not a repeat of the outbreak of last year of an epidemic in West Africa killed more than 11,300 people mostly in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia.

Don't let out politicians know. They'll institute a travel ban and blame it on Obama (because if Obama had contained the Ebola outbreak in Africa with funds that he wasn't granted, this outbreak might not be happening).

The point I'm trying to make is that the Ebola outbreaks are (and still will be) much ado about nothing. The virus is essentially non-contagious unless you come in contact with bodily fluids of an infected person. There's a vaccine readily available (or almost ready) that has shown 70-100% protection rate against the virus, and if infected, if you're lucky enough to be in a developed country, your chances of survival greatly increase.

This isn't the first outbreak of Ebola in the region either. Ebola didn't spring up during the West Africa outbreak; it just so happened that the infrastructure to monitor, contain, and prevent infections was seriously weak in those countries and that's how the virus was able to spread.

In other words: this is nothing to be too concerned about, which is why I made the comment.

I am pretty sure that the Congo/Zaire Ebola virus is different from the one that plagued West Africa. The West African Ebola virus stemmed from bats, while the Cong/Zaire virus is from eating bushmeat (monkeys). The latter has a significantly higher mortality rate, and kills off its host too fast to effectively spread.

Yep, the first "major" outbreak was in 1976. They happen on a regular basis, and typically no more than a few hundred die in each outbreak.

I'd like to add that I do not want to come out as indifferent to those who live in the region and are at risk BUT let's not overhype things that don't need to be either.

Yes, the proportions are at a miss. And ebola virus is potentially very dangerous, people die too quickly to spread, but with mutations who knows. So I am glad WHO responses like they do. No need for panic, but better be cautious with this.
