Your Top Ten Favorite TV Characters Of All Time

Fri May 05, 2017 11:34 pm

No right or wrong in this one. Just list your favorites and why, and in no particular order.

1. Kara Thrace, Battlestar Galactica 2003 (Katee Sackhoff). One of the most complex characters I've ever seen on a show. She was an obnoxious, foul-mouthed, insubordinate woman. She was also a vulnerable, deeply spiritual person as well. Don't know what she was at the end, but the character is an all-time great.

2. Archie Bunker, All In The Family (Carrol O'Connor). The show was light years ahead of his time, and old Arch was just the average uneducated, highly ignorant hero. The show broke a lot of barriers.

3. Les Nessman, "WKRP In Cincinnati" (Richard Sanders) All you have to think of with Les was "The Turkey's are falling like wet bags of cement! Oh, The Humanity!" I still laugh when hearing him mispronounce "Chi Chi Rodriguez", and chihuahua".

4. Jean-Luc Picard "Star Trek-The Next Generation" (Patrick Stewart) The heart of an explorer and the soul of a poet. His performance in the episode "The Inner Light" is still one of the best I've ever seen.

5. Mary Richards, "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" (Mary Tyler Moore) The All-American girl working at the most incompetent television station of all time.

6. Josh Lyman "The West Wing" (Bradley Whitford) Never thought he was good enough. But he was the soul behind the Bartlett Adminstration.

7. Burt Campbell, "Soap" (Richard Mulligan). The mumbling, always nervous Bert. Another show that pushed the envelope.

8. Alex P. Keaton "Family Ties" (Michael J. Fox) The conservative oddball in a liberal family. He was almost just as good in "Spin City", but this one was one of the best comedies in the 80's IMHO.

9. Gaius Baltar "Battlestar Galactica, 2003" (James Callis) Couldn't keep his fly closed and 20 billion lost their lives. He had brilliant comedic timing when he needed it, and he could wax poetic in a way that would almost make Shakespear Proud (Daybreak, Part 3).

10. Josiah Bartlett "The West Wing", (Martin Sheen) The guy who played a president probably more than anyone saved his best for this show. Showed him as an imperfect person and president, and still one that could deliver a speech like JFK.

Let's see your list.

Best TV character of all time, if you ask me. And definitely the best sitcom ever made, hands-down.

You folks watch a lot more TV than I do. One character that came to mind when I saw this thread was Dr. Gregory House (Hugh Laurie)... The show probably ran twice as long as it should have, but the early episodes were really different for the time.

It's right up there. There were so many good performances on that show. I could almost put Chuck and Bob on there along with so many others.

In no particular order:
-Raj from Big Bang Theory. I can relate to him in terms of trying to communicate with females, although I think he eventually is able to talk to women without having to be drunk. I haven't watched the show in a couple years.

-Homer Simpson. Specifically 1990s Homer Simpson, after that his character goes downhill in my opinion.

-Huey from The Boondocks. Revolutionary socially speaking but still reasonable.

-Finn from Adventure Time. Always trying to do whats right and be honest.

-Marceline from Adventure Time. Mostly because of her voice actor, the lovely singer Olivia Olson.

-Peridot from Steven Universe. Provides comedy relief but also shows how a person can turn from an enemy to an ally.

-Morty from Rick and Morty. Mostly because of his voice actor who has to do many roles in just that show as well as other shows, but I also relate to the awkwardness of the character.

-Dipper from Gravity Falls. Again I relate to his awkwardness, and also trying to find his niche in society.

Nice with a non-political thread here. It seems like I don't watch enough TV-series to list 10 favorites, but here are a few, in no particular order:

-11th Doctor, Dr Who (Matt Smith)
-Colonel Flagg, M*A*S*H (Edward Winter)
-Q, Star Trek (TNG, DS9 and VOY) (John de Lancie)

People playing themselves are not characters, ie news anchors and talks show hosts. The thread would have said your top ten TV Personalities of all Time, instead of characters. How hard can it be?? But, it's just a thread, so break the rules, and when I get time, I'll break the rules also, and list my top ten TV personalities, which will include some sports stars, as "they were on TV"... :biting:

In no particular order:

1.Roger Sterling from Mad Men. He is a drunk, misogynist no doubt. But some of his one liners just crack me up.

2.Josiah Bartlett from the West Wing. Like others have said, Martin Sheen just nailed the character. Love it.

3.Sam Seaborne from the West Wing. I can't find the right word for it, he's tough and vulnerable at the same time.

4.Liz Lemon from 30 Rock. Tina Fey is delightful.

5.Harvey Spector from Suits. Cool as hell and just the ultimate guy.

6.Mike McLintlock from Veep. Just a total screw up, but again, his one liners just get me.

7.Buster from Arrested Development. Childlike and quirky.

8.Elizabeth Jennings from The Americans. Strong woman that works hard to hide her flaws.

9.Bubbles from Trailer Park Boys. Guy is just strange, but with a big heart. "These carts are public domain Ricky!"

10.Dwight Schrute from the Office. Another quirky dude nailed by Rainn Wilson.

1. Edmund Blackadder (Rowan Atkinson) - the whole series, but particularly the last. Just brilliant.
2. Baldrick (Tony Robinson) - for the same reason
3. Dr. Niles Crane (David Hyde Pierce) - brilliant lines, superbly delivered
4. Christopher Foyle (Michael Kitchen) - softly spoken, but firm. Always one of my favourite detectives
5. Frank Spencer (Michael Crawford) - one of the most brilliant comic creations. Hard to believe that this man is the same person that became the first Phantom of the Opera!
6. Ziva David (Cote de Pablo) - no longer on NCIS, but a superb character when she was; great interplay, particularly with DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly). One of the strongest female characters on television.
7. Willow Rosenberg (Alison Hannigan) - Buffy's right hand woman, thoughout the series; gentle, kind, but witty.
8. Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) - made the series. Wouldn't be the same without him.
9. Del Trotter (David Jason) - legendary television character. his bar fall is still one of the most brilliant and funniest scenes ever.
10. Fr. Ted Crilly (Dermot Morgan) - sadly no longer with us, but a hugely talented comic actor. Fr. Ted is still very watchable after twenty years, with a superb range of eccentric characters, but Ted was superb. Special mention has to go to Jim Norton, who played the tyrannical Bishop Brennan - brilliant in the few episodes in which he appeared.

Sheldon Cooper - Big Bang

Margo Leadbetter - The Goodlife (Good Neighbours in the USA) The Goodlife was a 1970's UK sitcom. Margo was a massive snob but very intelligent. She had the ability to put people in their place without swearing, shouting or screaming.

Sir Humphrey Appleby - Yes Minister. (UK 1980's sitcom) Sir Humphrey was head of the civil service and very found of red tape/admin and making things as difficult for the government as possible. (Personally I think he might of worked for BA fares department...but thats another story)

A big yes to these three, actually, just about any David Jason character, i've been watching Open All Hours lately, a fantastic show.

Compo Simmonite, Americans, just google it.

Yep, a classic.

Sir Humphrey Appleby - Yes Minister. (UK 1980's sitcom) Sir Humphrey was head of the civil service and very found of red tape/admin and making things as difficult for the government as possible. (Personally I think he might of worked for BA fares department...but thats another story)

Oh yes, boy the BBC put out some great shows in the '80's

In no order:

Audrey fforbes-Hamilton (To the Manor Born)
Victor Meldrew (One Foot in the Grave)
Basil Fawlty (Fawlty Towers)
Hyacinth Bucket prounced 'Bouquet' (Keeping Up Appearances)
George Roper (George & Mildred, Man about the House)
Siegfried Farnon (All Creatures Great & Small)
James Herriot (All Creatures Great & Small)
Thomas Magnum (Magnum, P.I.)
Michael Knight (Knight Rider)
Jughead Jones (Riverdale)

Collective reasons:

Played by highly experienced screen and/or stage actors.
The supporting characters were often just as good, which made the characters even better to watch.
The characters are played by actors that are appealing. Different actor, character may be different and maybe less likeable.
Listening to the audio can be just as good as watching.

Oh yeah, definitely. The 70's were great too. Seemed to fade off by the late 90's IMHO.

Some of those characters from Are You Being Served were good too.

Forgot to mention more common threads in mine were also, the triumph over evil, and a big one, humility, or the complete opposite, big egos that are brought to account by the time the credits roll.

Characters who inspire you to get out and do something productive or creative, or ones that give admiration for their work or a particular profession.

Characters that are true to life and depicting a particular demographic of society.

I don't like weak characters in books or on screen, but self-deprecating characters are just the best for entertainment and humour.

Any character that can make me laugh or keep me laughing is the ultimate. Those scenes that you can watch for years or a hundred times over and still laugh just as much, they are memorable (characters).

Characters that you just want to reach out to can also be very effective too, ones that draw compassion.

No particular order, but mostly judged by their entertainment value:

Anya/Anyanka from "Buffy, the Vampire slayer"
Jeff from "Coupling", BBC version, not the NBC (?) Travesty
Busdriver Stu from "Pete and Pete"
Rory Williams from "Dr. Who", never have sci-fi and romance been more fun.
Jack O'Neil from "Stargate SG-1"
Chloe from "Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23"
Niles from "The Nanny"
Xev Bellringer from "Lexx"
Helena „Lena“ Claudette Schneider from "Türkisch für Anfänger" (Turkish for beginners)
Stewie Griffin from Family Guy

Best regards

Bojack Horseman, of Bojack Horseman. Will Arnette.

Probably the most relatable tv character this decade. While not especially original, the writing is so well adapted with that in mind that it manages to appear otherwise. And as humorously as it's intended, its been a long time since I've seen a character continually express so well what it's like to be so successful and miserable at the same time.

Frank Underwood, of House of Cards. Kevin Spacey.

America badly needs (and totally deserves) a president like that.

Dorothy Zbornak, of Golden Girls. Bea Arthur. Fantastic in every way.

Sara Silverman, in anything she's ever been in.

Spacey, smart, sexy, and funny. A rare combination. Would be nice if more of that existed in real life.

Rick Sanchez, of Rick and Morty. Justin Roiland.

Above average intelligence and a practical management style of a ton of existential issues nicely forgive a breathtaking disregard for safety, ethics and any semblance of common sense. Also he convinced his daughter to divorce that loser. I like literally all of those things.
Much like a GE90, I'm a huge fan of Big Twins...

Frank Underwood of House of Cards (Kevin Spacey)
Tony Soprano of The Sopranos (James Gandolfini)
Hal from Malcolm In The Middle (Bryan Cranston)
Lois from Malcolm In The Middle (Jane Kaczmarek)
Michael Scott from The Office (Steve Carell)

And although not a character, I've always liked Conan. Find him both entertaining, smart, and knows he's a comedian and not some fake parasite like Kimmel.
RIP McDonnell Douglas
