What brand of pasta do you normally buy?

I am pretty sure that many people here love pasta, and if there is a brand of pasta that you normally buy, which brand is it?

We usually get the brand that is on sale, but here in Arizona that brand (other than store brands) is most often American Beauty by New World Pasta. Depending on the state that you live in, New World Pasta actually sells its pasta under several different names, including Ronzoni, American Beauty, Skinner, San Giorgio, Creamette, and Prince. Some states may feature more than one brand depending on which part of the state.

We don't eat a lot of pasta but when we do we splurge a bit and get the Di Martino.

My wife swears by De Cecco linguini and she has it nailed. In Portland, OR (in case altitude matters) cook two minutes less than the box says for perfect al dente results, I think it's 6 minutes.

Just checked the pantry - Mueller's is the favorite. Their egg noodles are great!

San Remo most of the time, also Barilla, Zafarelli, or whatever is on sale sometimes.

It's a serious pain in the ass and why all Italian grandmas have gnarled hands, from that and making the meatballs. The other downside is you can't get the homemade stuff to come out al dente unless you're Lidia Bastianich or something. We've tried at least 10 times and for all that effort it's a waste of time for the end result. Stick with packaged, but at least try it once.

Usually a local generic.

I used to buy Barilla, but switched to Bertolli after the former's anti-gay tirade.

Then I mostly just went with cheaper generics. Don't really notice much difference.

I am amazed by the amount of people here who buy specific brands of pasta, and even remember what those brands are called! Personally I just go down to a supermarket and pull a suitable package off the shelf.

Same here. I generally stock up on whatever is on offer but out of preference I just go with a store label pasta.

Even the Aldi stuff is pretty good these days

Wednesday was Prince Day in Chicago as well, but we don't live there now and I did not find Prince on the shelves on my last visit. Is it still available there?

Not that hard when two shelves are just about completely dark blue. Everything else isn't as in your face as those Barilla packs. The dark blue boxes with the really bright coloured pasta image on the front, that's fairly hard to miss. It's a lesson in consistent branding.

American Beauty is fairly easy to spot, since their red and gold packaging stands out. The other New World Pasta brands aren't as distinctive, although Creamette's green packaging is somewhat different enough from Barilla's blue.

i use marcato atlas pasta machine,
i make lasagna and fettuccine noodles even on spaghetti because i like thick pasta. this thread is making me hungry.

Pretty much this. I buy Trader Joe's. It's 99 cents and I really don't notice any difference. I'm certainly not going to pay upwards of $5-10 for a pound of pasta.

Well, wouldn't you know it, a friend of mine and his Italian fiancée are moving to Alaska in a few weeks and trying to get rid of as much excess as they can as they pack up. As a result, I'm now the proud owner of a gently-used pasta roller, so I hope to take a stab at it soon!

When my sister and I were kids we professed great love for mostaccioli, only I now believe that those noodles were actually ziti and that mostaccioli is narrower.

Really, I love pasta so much I don't think I can pick just one. My favorite is probably a tie between capellini, mostaccioli, fettucine, ziti, spaghettini, penne, spaghetti, rigatoni, vermicelli, rotelle, linguine, fusilli, perciatelli, radiatore, conchiglie, and orecchiette.

Back in my expat days, I got to eat some Italian pasta. It was brought back as a gift to the country I was living in at the time. The pasta (I think it was linguine... linguine-like, anyway) was packaged, but it still blew my mind. Everything since has really been a step down.

Doesn't anyone remember the Barilla anti gay thing - I for one and many of my friends still say - anything but Barilla.
They may have tried to turn that PR disaster around, but mud sticks. It hurt the brand.
I just buy the Publix one here in Miami - works just as well as any other..... probably Barilla too. But I'm still not buying it.

Yet that hasn't affected Barilla's market share at all; they are still #1 in the United States (New World Pasta is #2, and the American Italian Pasta Company is #3).

Aha - I'm sure you're right - I was just posting the argument out there as some kind of anti Barilla thing. It was more a cheeky wind up post than anything too serious. I hold my own kind of mini protest, but I'm sure that some, and many others couldn't care less.
We all like to hold our mini anti corporate vendetta's sometimes - seriously - its more a bit of do good-er fun more than anything else.

I bought pasta the other day, and I went straight to the Barilla! Such is the popularity of it on this thread!

I've been having pasta quite a bit lately and as it happens my cache is almost entirely Barilla (Byerly's often has a BOGO sale on it). I have to say it has turned out quite perfectly al dente every time.

Hard to believe that's a Barilla thing; more likely I'm simply more skilled now at timing the cookage than I used to be. Still it would be interesting to see if Creamette or Ronzoni or DeCecco are somehow tougher to get right :boggled:
