Looking to buy a suit

Mon Apr 24, 2017 11:17 pm

Hey all!

I'm in a lifetime member to the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS - ΣΑΠ) and with my college graduation coming up, I thought I'd go buy my first suit considering one of my membership perks is 40% off merchandise at Men's Warehouse. The suite that I like that falls into my price range is a Pronto Uomo suit. I've never heard of that brand before and would like to know if it is a good quality suit that ill last for a long time.

This is the suit in question: http://www.menswearhouse.com/mens-suits ... =48%20Long

Thanks! :)

Don't know about the brand, but slim/tailored fit is what has been in and what will be if your body can handle the inward curve. Just get it tailored correctly (cuffs, hems, slacks w/ flat front), which I'm sure MW does. Just IMO.

Bond street in London is the go-to place for all things in menswear. You only need to tell them one of two words; 'conservative' or 'contemporary', then leave everything else in their capable hands.

Brings loads of money :)

I don't think the OP is looking for Brioni, Kiton, or something off Savile Row...

On the east coast US, NYC specifically, I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend Mohan's in midtown. They have custom suit packages starting AFAIK ~$1700 for 3 suits. It all depends on the fabric you want...Scabal, Ermenegildo Zegna, Loro Piana....

Try Anthony Squires: https://anthonysquires.com.au/spring-summer-2016-17

Might be more affordable with the AU dollar being lower than the US dollar. And the quality is very, very high. I've got numerous suits from them, but I have a store around the corner from my work so it is more convenient. If you want extra trousers to go with the jacket, they can do that as well, I had that done. Ended up about AUD$1500 for the jacket and 3 pairs of trousers which were tailored.

I also like Henry Bucks: http://www.henrybucks.com.au/company/history

They do international sales - but online you miss out on the in store service which is what they do so well. They know what real customer service is. Very trustworthy.

Pronto Uomo is a Men's Wearhouse brand. Suits are no different than any other product, you get what you pay for. As I'm sure you know, even for off-the-shelf suits, this one is at the bottom of the price range. Set your expectations accordingly and make sure you get it tailored.

If you need a suit once in a blue moon, this one will last. If wearing a suit is going to become a regular habit, expect to buy one or two new ones after getting a few paychecks. Knot Standard may be an option for you in the future. Check whether they offer a discount to your school. My nephew got his first one at half price that way.

Oddly enough, Macy's actually has some good suits at good prices. Two of my best-looking suits are from Macy's. Not as pricey as Nordstrom or Bloomingdale's, but not much sacrificed in quality, really.

I would also recommend looking atJos A Banks - which is a part of MW. I have a blazer from them and love it. Jos A Banks uses very good fabrics and these days that is the key for lower to moderate suits. Alterations can be important - just look at how sloppy Trump looks in his ill fitting suits. Plan on paying for those alterations as it is no longer a part of the purchase price. Check to see if the jacket fits well across the shoulders and neck, reasonable at the waist and sleeve length is not too far off.

For the current "trim fit" option make sure it is not tight at the button - you don't need to look like you're wearing your little brother's suit! If you are going to put items in the coat pockets then avoid the trim fits - there are a lot of very well designed shapings on other models.

As a side note, I was remembering an old line suit retailer the other day. This was a "working man's" suit store, but their made in the USA products were of a production quality that is equal to today;s better suits. Lots of handwork, non-fused front on the coats and you actually got two pairs of pants because they knew that the pants were the first to go. The company dropped out of this local market in the 60's, leaving the market to Sears and similar stores.

Where do you live ?

Free advice, if you have a casino near you, go for a walk through it, one of the floor supervisors will be dressed better than the rest (it's part of the casino DNA), ask him where he buys his suits, chances are he has found a little mom-pop store that does custom tailored suits for the same price as an off the shelf suit. Do not buy a suit at any place that advertises the likes of 3 suits for $300, cheap polyester crap, but on the other hand, there is no reason to spend a ton of money on a suit.

Look for a place that can tailor the suit to you, it will make all the difference, go with a standard solid color, I would say black, while single breasted seem to be the thing right now, IMHO, there is nothing better than a good fitting double breasted black suit. Go for natural fiber, most of the cheaper suits are a blend, saves you money, wears better, but again IMHO, they are not as comfortable.as all natural.

How to determine if you should buy a black suit:

Are you an undertaker?

If yes: Buy a black suit
If no: Do not buy a black suit

A black suit is for weddings and funerals. That's about it. Or "dressing down" at a black tie affair. It's of extremely limited value outside of those very formal occasions.

If the OP wants a versatile suit, it's either navy blue (solid or pinstripe) or dark charcoal grey. Those colors are like the universal power socket adapters of suits. They work with anything.

Actually I remember Frank Sinatra being a strong believer that suits should only coming in black - everything else was too informal.

My preference for a dressy suit is a good navy suit - with no hint of purple. That can be dressed up or dressed down. A wise spread collar shirt with French Cuffs and the right tie can be pretty dressy. Stripe shirts (including button down collars) with the right tie can be fairly formal or very informal.

I agree on a solid fabric for the first suit. People jumping straight into stripes or plaids find, to their horror, that the pattern goes all the way down their legs! I would actually warn customers trying on their first non-plain suit that it will seem odd for a while - and they agreed.
