As I suspect most a.nutters know, in December of 1917 two ships collided in Halifax Harbor and one of them, the
Mont Blanc, caught fire. It was a munitions ship, loaded with many, many tons of TNT and therefore exploded. I have read that this was the "largest man-made explosion ever, outside of the nuclear age" and that actually still held the title, well into the nuke age, of "largest ever non-nuclear explosion in human history."
A) Is that true (or at least
was it true three or four days ago);
2) Is it still true, or did the MOAB detonation outdo it?
Of course there might be some definitions and quantifications needed; i.e. what does "largest" explosion mean... but I will leave all such discussion to the science-y people in this here community.
