How much do you pay for internet?

Fri Mar 10, 2017 4:57 am

I just wanted to know the internet rates around the world..

I have been getting free 1 GB 4GB every day since last 6 months, and I will pay ₹303 ($5) per month for 1 GB 4G/day from 1 April.
My telecom operator Reliance Jio claims this is the cheapest 4G around the world.

How much do you pay?

I pay the equivalent of roughly 25 USD / Month for unlimited calls & texts, Spotify premium and 20GB of data. In the house we have a 100/100MB line, which cost around 15 USD / Month.

Right now I'm looking at a banner ad here on anet, which sells 20 hours of calls and 20GB of data for 13USD a month.

In India, internet access is quite expensive and depends on type of access.
Mobile internet packs are very expensive: I pay around $6 for a 1GB pack of 4G data with Vodafone. And i rarely get 4G speeds even in Vasant Kunj (Delhi).

Landline access is somewhat cheaper: pay around $20/month for a 100Mbps/100GB package for some very sketchy service.

I pay $17.90 for my mobile plan which offers 20GB of data & 333 free SMSs (no call credits though, but then again I hardly call). I also pay $ 44 for my home fibre broadband which offers 30 Mbps (apparently I'm supposed to be upgraded to 50 Mbps later this year) and some TV channels (I paid extra for sports) as well. Thankfully data is uncapped. I also pay $21 for satellite TV, but that's almost the bare minimum package that I could take - no sports channels, no movie channels.

Internet & satellite TV is hideously expensive here in Malaysia, and the service is so-so thanks to monopolistic practices. Thank god there's more competition in the mobile telco category, so at least we managed to get lower costs for our mobile needs.

Since the question is "how much do I pay" then for my main smartphone the answer is 0 : unlimited calls, unlimited texts, 5GB data (at 4G speeds, then you still get data, just slow). That's paid for by my work. I also have a 4G/wifi thingie with 30GB data plan, also paid for by my work. As for what it costs, they're not commercial plans as the telco is a sister company of mine.

For the home and other smartphones it's become common in France to package things. For 40€/month a DSL 20Mb connection (could be 1Gb fiber for the same price, if fiber was available), 200 TV channels, unlimited phone calls to many countries, cheap for other countries, included hard drive, included Blu-Ray player. You can then get 2 basic mobile phone lines for free, but with only 50MB data it's not really "internet friendly". Otherwise for 16€/month/line you get mobile lines with unlimited everything, and 50GB at 4G speeds. It's expected the telco will offer unlimited 4G next week. If you're not a landline customer of that telco (called free) you can get the same mobile offers for 2€/month (basic) and 20€/month (all unlimited).

Luckily in France we never had mandatory data limits on landlines.

We have no capability for wired internet because we live in a travel trailer (caravan) and move frequently.

Our internet access is throughly phone plans. Very seldom are we in a location with free WiFi available. We do all banking, e-mail, Skype with kids/grandkids, etc through our phone plans.

We have AT&T 2 phones & 1 hot spot device on a 20GB per month plan and Verizon 1 phone & 1 hot spot device on a 18 GB per month plan. We have found ourselves in areas where AT&T has good 4G/LTE and Verizon can't hold a data capable signal. And the reverse.

We use a total of about 28-35 GB per month. The total cost is near USD $ 400 per month.

We have tried some of the heavily promoted other plans and find those not on the Verizon or AT&T networks don't provide coverage about 40% of the time. Cheap carriers which lease bandwidth from Verizon or AT&T throttle data over 2 GB per month to less than 3G speeds.

We've had Sprint and t-Mobile in the past and their coverage network was too limited.

Yes, we do spend as much time as possible in non-urban locations. But there are coverage issues even in cities. The AT&T good, no Verizon data I mentioned above occurs at a campground in a Dallas, TX suburb of over 40K population just 25 miles from downtown Dallas. We spend 21 days in late December/ early Jan just 16 miles from the Pacific Ocean in San Diego, and absolutely no cell phone coverage without driving five miles out of the hills toward the ocean.

seems to be comparable to those data sim selling in china that you only need to spend like 20 USD to buy a sim card and then you get free data service with zero monthly charge for the next year

Unlimited everything on mobile for $90 a month.

At home I have an unlimited 75mbps connection for 50 bucks a month. Often times I can get double that.

Two separate accounts:

1. Cell phone with AT&T - 2 iPhones (myself and spouse) and 1 flip phone for the father-in-law. 20 GB of data per month shared with rollover data (currently have 35GB 'saved up') = $145/mo

Eventually, when the FIL passes, I will drop that phone line and will save about $15/mo.

2. AT&T U-verse Internet (unlimited data) + Cable TV with 6 TV cable boxes. Internet speed of 50 mbps = $165/mo

*the internet portion is $50/mo. The rest is tv service and the 6 cable boxes.

Total for phone, internet and tv is right at $310/month.

I know people bash the US for its poor Internet infrastructure relative to other 1st World Nations, so that's why I ask this...

Do I understand correctly that your fees are paid to the government? If yes, is the Internet subsidized at all through general taxes such that your individual user fee is that low?

I am with a private company which has a dish on the roof. I pay EUR45 for 50MB which is dire.

Mobile phone I keep with a UK company called Three. I pay £20 a month for 12GB data 4G and 300 voice mins and 300 text/sms. I also can roam free in the USA and Europe. One of the best deals around.

$5 plan that I mention above also includes unlimited calls and SMS along with free roaming in India.

The same company, Reliance Jio is launching broadband services as well. I guess it's going to the cheapest broadband around the world!

5 GB daily for 30 days (150 GB total), with no speed limit for ₹1000 ($ 16)!

For your camper stuff, you should look into resellers. 4G Antenna Shop resells unlimited AT&T and Verizon mobile internet; you can google them and talk to them to see what they have. I have a T-Mobile Unlimited data smartphone via them at low rate (they change their rates all the time) and it works well for me. I pay $32/month for T-Mobile unlimited (voice, text, LTE data). AT&T could set you back by about 100 or so a month if bought via them. They may offer you a choice of AT&T or Cricket base data plans. Cricket runs off AT&T towers and should have largely the same coverage, but their ping times are WAY higher and traffic takes lower priority on towers.

Ouch.

If you're ever in Comcast land, get on somebody's xfinitywifi access. It's a lifesaver in Comcast cities if you're mobile and need to save money.

Also, get a wifi dongle and directional antenna(s), you can use any wifi from further, e.g. if you're parked near a place that offers free wifi a directional antenna can make a huge difference.

I prepay $5 per chunk of 250MB / 250 texts / 250 minutes in the USA. So $0.02/MB, or $20/GB, which is terrible, but currently prepay as you go works for me. I only use data and only a few hundred megs a month as I'm on wifi most of the time, including xfinitywifi thanks to a friend.

My city has the usual cable / DSL duopoly with mediocre service and high prices for everyone. There is a mom and pop fixed wireless service with good prices but they never advertise, and another local company lighting up new apartment buildings with fiber, but otherwise it's Comcast or DSL.

The less densely populated an area is, the most expensive it will be to connect. Usually these areas got phone line decades after more urban ones, sometimes a full century later ! Third world countries don't even bother, mobile phones are the way to go for them.

I'm looking at building a house and I sure hope the telco will not come with some old copper cable to wire it, but I'm not too hopeful, it's exactly what happened to a colleague less than a year ago.

[twoid][/twoid]Landline I pay $0 because its provided for me when I'm up at camp for my two weeks of work, and when I stay in most hotels on my days off.

For my mobile, I pay a ridiculous $115 for a ridiculous 7GB of data and unlimited talk & text. Last year I was paying $100 for 2GB. Welcome to Canada.

I pay $65/month for internet and 78 channels. I use FireTV as part of my Prime membership. As the OTT offerings become more compelling (Sling, DirectTV, Hulu) I'll cut the cord completely and will likely pay only $30. At that point, I'll use an HD antennae for the local broadcast channels.

My current place has a flat, obligatory internet/cable package for $84. I HAVE to pay it, but I don't mind as the speed is top-notch and basic cable has many channels, though granted, I only watch MSNBC for Rachel Maddow's show. Once I move out, I'll probably give up the cable unless my housemate is willing to split the bill.

For the fixed cable line I pay € 40 per month and get 200 Mb/s, usually tested at around 204 Mb/s. As a single user, in real live I can almost never make use of that bandwidth because the notoriously slow internet servers are the true bottlenecks. Well, there are a few exceptions: when downloading some Linux stuff, the transmission rate is often at it's optimum.

I don't need mobile connectivity regularely. But if so, I use to buy prepaid plans at reasonable rates. (But if you look at them closer, their price to value ratio is horrible!)

That is in Switzerland, isn't it? I'm not aware of any other country with a glass fiber infrastructure at such affordable rates.

In France you can get FTTH for the same price as ADSL, about 40€/month. If you live in the right place, that is. Speed is 1GB down / 200MB up. Since you've got end-to-end fiber there is nothing preventing further increases in speed.

Now if you want to get fiber where it hasn't been deployed yet, you can try to get a professional offer, then it's much more expensive. I install TOIP infrastructure and many companies opt to only get SDSL lines for small offices even if fiber is available.

Here in the US in Washington, our family pays $40 a month for Centurylink internet that's 60 MBPS, and we have Verizon for phone service, with 10 GB across three lines for $80 (me and my parents), not including access fees and phone costs. Overall, I think we have a good deal for our service.
