MuchMusic Election Exam

Mon Nov 06, 2000 10:29 am

MuchMusic sent an exam to all party leaders in Canada on a number of issues, and their answers are at this site: http://www.muchmusic.com/events/elections2000/. I think it was a great idea to increase the youth voter interest in the election and a way to get to know the real people behind their parties. These were the issues that the candidates were questioned on:

Education
Environment
Aboriginal Rights
Health Care
Money
Gun Control
Gay Rights
Employment
Poverty
Arts & Culture

I liked most of Stockwell Day's answers except on gay rights. He weaseled his way out of the question by saying he "supports the same position as the liberals, that marriage is between a man and a woman". I like a lot of his ideas, but he scares me on this one. If I wasn't gay it would probably be a much easier decision. He was being cheeky saying he thought Ross Rebagliati is a role model because he is a "grassroots kind of guy". That was funny.

Have a look! The answers are actually quite interesting and revealing. The leaders of Liberal, PC, Alliance, NDP, Natural Law, Greens and Communist Party (Marxsist-Lenninist) all answered the survey.

Look beneath the surface before you support the Reform Alliance Party. Who are their members; what are their values and beliefs; what are their backgrounds? Yes, what are their backgrounds? It won't be just gay rights that scare you. Look beyond the slick, US-style marketing package. They talk the talk but what are they really saying? Look beneath the surface. Ask questions...about health, education, national standards, provincial devolution, social services, human rights, value for taxes, religious issues, reality behind free votes in Parliament.

It amazes me that we complain about the "fear" of extreme right-wing parties and individuals being elected in other countries (a recent Austrian example comes to mind) and, yet, here we are in Canada with the "Jerry Falwell" Party in second place hoping to become the government.

Stockwell Day, the leader of the Alliance Party, said he gets his instructions from God, and no one else. Nice concept but the more he and his party say, the more I realize they do not understand the Canadian Parliamentary System of Government.
