Very carefully?   All I remember from geography class is that the division line was generally north/south, thus creating a east and west germany.

Alright, let me use my history knowledge ( If have any )

Germany was devided into 4 zones after the Potsdam ( or Yalta agreement ) Soviet , American , British and French Zone. Soviet occupied mainly the eastern part of Germany while the other 3 super powers occupied the western part. Berlin was devided in the same fashion , only that Berlin was very much into the Soviet Zone, the 3 superpowers ( France , America and British ) later merged their zones together , which enforced the Berlin Blockade by Stalin which block all the entrance to the western side of Berlin which caused later, the Berlin Airlift.

i think Frankfurt was in the WesternZone , not sure about the other cities..

I'm not sure when the Berlin Wall Came along

What THAI747 wrote is correct. The well-knowned german cities of the ex-DDR (German Democratic Republic - East Germany) are East Berlin, Dresden, Leipzig, Rostock, Potsdam, Erfurt, Magdeburg, Halle, Cottbus, Schwerin, Frankfurt/Oder (Frankfurt/Main is in the West), Neubrandenburg. I think all other german cities you ever heard about are in the West of Germany.

If you are interested, I could send you a (scanned) map by e-mail.
Hope, this helps.

GUNDO...

Try cnn.com/coldwar........they did an excellent TV series and have the chronicles online for people to view. I'm sure you'll find a map there.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me as I was a Canadian soldier during 1976-1981 and served for several NATO tours of duty in "West" Germany.

Rol was absolutly right with the cities. All other known cities, he did not mention, were in West Germany e.g. Munich, Stuttgart, Cologne, Bonn (former capital), Duesseldorf, Hannover, Hamburg, Bremen, Frankfurt/Main (FRA) and many more. Berlin was diveded but within the GDR (German Democratic Republic = Soviet). That is why the western countries had to run for months this famous "air-bridge" in 1948 when the Soviets blocked all supply to western Berlin. The GDR was more or less the north-eastern part of Germany today. If you are looking for a map, look for a map of Europe before 1989. I am sure you will find it on the net or in any older encyclopedia in a good library.
Hope it helps. If you have any other specific questions to newer European history, feel free an send me an e-mail: phsauter@dplanet.ch
