Query on fuselage ‘appendages’ on C4 (RAF C130)

Sun Jan 13, 2019 9:31 am

Hi all,

Question for the experts.

Have a watch of this YouTube clip of various aircraft flying through the Mach Loop in the UK (love watching it by the way!)

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rB4HVn6Rnmk

At about 1:05mins there are a couple of C130-30’s flying through the loop from Brize Norton.

Just wondering if anyone can tell me what the (I didn’t know what to call them actually ......!?!?!?) ‘appendages’ are that are on both port and starboard sides of the fuselage at the rear, near the tail ramp?

They are an ovalish shape.....sorry I can’t really be more specific.

I wasn’t able to come up with anything on ‘Google’.

Hopefully someone can shed some light, thanks in advance.

Cheers,

JT

I think what you’re seeing are I/R jammers designed to foil surface to air missiles

Thanks Max Q, you are spot on.....IRCM - Infrared Counter Measures, likely the AN/ALQ-157M or similar.

Cheers,

JT
