Dutch Astronaut accidentally calls 911 from ISS causing panic in Houston

Fri Jan 04, 2019 4:08 am

A funny story LOL Since calls from the ISS go through Houston to dial out from the station an astronaut must dial 9 first. Since the call would then originate from the U.S. they must then dial 011. A Dutch astronaut missed the 0 dialing 911 causing security to rush to mission control.

At first I was wondering what security was thinking they were going to do - check for suspicious persons around the ISS? Welfare call on the ISS? It seems they thought 911 had been called from the room containing the phone patch, which makes more sense.

André Kuipers, the Astronaut in question, was kind of disappointed that they didn't come-up to meet him.

Funny this has been picked up on international news. It was the radio show: met het oog op morgen. For anyone who understands Dutch, it was about the future of space exploration. Quite interesting to hear his thoughts, together with some other experts from the science community and from ESA.

Anybody who's ever worked on a private system where you have to dial 9 to get out realizes there's no perfect solution to avoid that and still allow 911 calls. You have to put warnings up that if you do accidentally do it, don't hang up, but explain your mistake to the 911 operator. They're use to it.

To dial 911 from a PBX, where 9 needs to be dialed to get out, a person would have to dial 9911. Where this situation goes wrong is when the dialer skips the "0" of the "011" international access code.

It is in the first paragraph and second of the various news articles on the topic... Security locked down MC for a time due to the mistakenly dialed 911 call.
