Another one in the dust

Thu Oct 04, 2018 8:13 am

French/German Mobile Asteroid Surface Scout (MASCOT) landed on the asteroid Ryugu.
( hitching a ride on the Japanese mission Hayabusa2 probe. )

I didn't even know that there was another (Euro) landing mission around after Rosetta/Philae.

so it is supposed to move on the surface?

No, just a stationary probe. Also doesn't have solar panels, so 16 h operation max. Lets see what it managed to find out.

It is apparently able to move via reaction wheels
( change orientation, do ?little? jumps ) to get places.

Mobility:
The gravity on Ryugu is so low that locomotion on wheels is no longer possible. Instead, an impulse is generated via an eccentrically mounted flywheel, which is accelerated and decelerated inside the lander. Depending on the activation of this actuator, various maneuvers such as the erection of different sides and jumping can be performed. [4]

Part of a complex JAXA program, four small rovers in total and a sample return.

Pictures and description of the MASCOT lander by Ralf Jaumann, DLR MASCOT team leader:

Ralf talks German, but there are partial descriptions in English text.

At least it is clearly shown how the flywheel jump system works (or rather worked - as planned MASCOT is already dead due to exhausted battery).
