RAF100 Events

Fri Jul 06, 2018 3:57 pm

There are many events around the UK to celebrate 100 years of the Royal Air Force, however I am going to focus on upcoming events in London, mainly as I am planning to be there!

From today until 9th July some aircraft on static display on Horseguard's Parade, only two are replicas which given they represent in service fast jets in the middle of a huge capital city, is understandable.

As the link shows, it tours around the UK.

Then the big one, on 10th July up to 100 aircraft over London, an airborne inspection by their Commander In Chief;

(In preparation for this event, I checked out the annual flypast after the Trooping Of The Colour last month, to get an idea of best place to be and all that. I have long meant to go see rather than watch on TV, a short show but 45 mins on the underground for me).
Last months flypast taken by amateur (not me, I was at the left of the palace);

Not much talk here sadly.

From the RAF's website:

Over a thousand servicemen and women will take part in a parade on The Mall at 11:25am.

Her Majesty The Queen, accompanied by The Prince of Wales, will present a new Queen's Colour to the Royal Air Force at a ceremony to mark its centenary, on the forecourt of Buckingham Palace.

Then at 1:00pm The Queen, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, other Members of the Royal Family and members of the public will witness the historic flypast where up to 100 aircraft, representing the RAF’s history, will fly over Buckingham Palace.

It promises to be a spectacle never seen before and one that won’t be seen again for a very long time.

It gets live coverage on BBC2 from 9:30am to 1:20pm local time.
What's coming:

And just for anyone who's wondering how that looks like; here are some pics from the last Trooping of the Colour, last June:

I'll sure be watching if I can. At times like these I'm really jealous of the Brits. :cry:

RAF 100 Years flypast - 100 Aircraft

Tue Jul 10, 2018 11:02 am

The whole of Norfolk seems to be empty of aircraft in preparation for the huge RAF 100 year flypast, due to start in less than an hour.

Those that can, pop outside in about an hour for the largest RAF flypast ever!

If you don’t get to see the RAF 100 Year flypast today, watch it on your computer or iPad.

Add an altitude filter of 0 - 7500 feet

Thanks to all the above for those great pics, I was under it, same spot I staked out for Trooping The Colour.

Got off the tube, what's this? For the first time in over a month, in London/SE England at least, bloody solid cloud!
And the Royal Standard was flapping too much for my liking as we got nearer to the time, hate to see the BBMF pull out, higher winds can make flying these old, irreplaceable aircraft a no go, especially over central London. And the RAF had warned this could happen.
But it didn't, Brenda and co came on to the balcony and the show began.

I was pleased to see the F-35B, delighted that there were three of them.
Other highlights included for interest, RC-135W, Sentinel, those Beech King Air ISTAR platforms, for pure spectacle that massive Typhoon formation, I was expecting a formation, just not 22 of them spelling '100'.

As those outside the UK mostly cannot access the BBC coverage, here it is elsewhere;
