Runway at Andersen AFB

Wed May 30, 2018 1:48 am

Does anyone have details on the "dip" in the runways at Andersen AFB, Guam? I was assigned to Andersen during the mid-1970s, and recall the uphill gradient caused significant acceleration loss, with a 500 foot drop off the north end of the runways. I've checked various aviation publications, and maybe I'm just missing the data. I seem to recall the "dip" was some 60 feet. Does anyone know the gradient? Length of the dip from beginning to end? Any pilot experiences? Thanx.

RW 6L has a .8% up slope so about 80 ft from one end to the other.. RW 6R is less. T/O data, speeds etc done nowdays by computers figure the gradient in the calculations.

Spent 2 years there flying D model Buff. Great experience and best assignment I had. Was loads of fun when you're at MTOW and you see the airspeed indicator suddenly stop it's rate of acceleration. But, I suppose the upside is you have instant altitude on the other side of the cliff!

Generally most takeoffs are on the right runway due to the lower gradient.

One thing I will add, the runway, when wet, was a handful. Between the rubber deposits and the coral the braking action would be poor at best in some locations.
