RAF Hawk crash

Tue Mar 20, 2018 2:53 pm

Just saw this pop up on the news. No announcements on the status of the crew.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-nort ... s-43476222

An aircraft used by the Red Arrows display team has crashed at RAF Valley on Anglesey.

The Ministry of Defence confirmed it was a Hawk aircraft and an emergency ambulance crew was sent to the scene at about 13:30 GMT on Tuesday.

It is understood two people were on board when the aircraft crashed.

Looking at the article again it doesn't say the Hawk was one that belonged to the Red Arrows. But rather saying it's the same sort of aircraft that's used by them. So maybe a normal training mission.

From several sources, photos of the wreckage appear to be red, and most are now saying it is a Red Arrows jet.

From this link:

It is understood the Red Arrows aircrew had been at RAF Valley for routine Hawk simulator training - something that takes place once a month. They had just taken off from the base and were on their way back to RAF Scampton, where the aerobatic team are based, when the incident happened.

Sadly it appears one of the crew (engineer) was killed. :tombstone:

Indeed. For whatever reason, command eject wasn't used and the pilot left the bird, sadly leaving the engineer to go in with the aircraft.

But isn't that the default ejection?

Per my understanding (mind you, I've only been up in a FJ once, and it wasn't a Hawk), it is:

Command pulls handle -> both punch out.
GIB pulls -> only he goes.

I can't speak for the Hawk, but on some aircraft the ejection sequence can be set for "solo" eject only for flights where only the front seat is occupied.

I guess to prevent a second seat becoming a needless collision hazard? I'm not sure really.

It would speed the ejection up if the rear seats sequence is skipped.

So that would point to an issue setting up the jet for this particular flight?

As a training aircraft, the Hawk T.1 allows command ejection from the rear seat only (as that is the normal instructor position). Therefore when the aircraft is flown from the front seat the aircraft commander cannot command the ejection of the other occupant.
