Saudi Arabia close to new Eurofighter order

Sun Mar 11, 2018 4:09 am

Good news for the Eurofighter if this goes ahead. It is certainly logical to top up their existing fleet and these should all be AESA and CFT equipped. It also helps future sales competitions as the aircraft should remain in production in the UK till the mid 2020s.

Saudi Arabia nears Typhoon jet deal with BAE

Saudi Arabia has moved closer to a deal to buy 48 Typhoon fighter jets, UK aerospace giant BAE Systems has said.

A memorandum of intent on the deal was signed after Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman met Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson.

BAE Systems said the signing was "a positive step towards agreeing a contract for our valued partner".

Downing Street said a target of £65bn worth of trade and investment had been agreed during the UK visit.

The preliminary order comes two months after BAE announced around 2,000 job cuts because demand for the Typhoon had slowed.

On a related note, apparently the Eurofighter is also firming for Malaysia over the Rafale based on EU trade issues with Palm Oil.

First Saudia-Arabia, then Qatar, then Kuwait, now Saudi-Arabia again. Will we possibly see joint exercises of their Eurofighter squadrons or rather optimisation of EF vs EF combat? Meanwhile, the UAE have shown interest in acquiring a Su-35 squadron as well as 24 F-35, pending export approval and have shown interest in both Eurofighter and Rafale. Looks like a major arms race down there. Good for business, bad for stability and peace.

Re: Malaysia: The malaysian air force is interesting - 8 F/A-18, 18 Su-30MKM & 12 MiG-29 (plus 18 F5). Unless they want to replace one of those with the EF or the Rafale, they're posed to have 4 different modern multirole fighters from 3 political factions.

These are to replace the MiG-29s and F-5s.

They should get the Saab Gripen E/F, and replace the F/A-18's as well. 3 sq worth of Gripen's make a nice standardized fleet and keep the Su-30's to complement them.
Many happy landings, greetings from The Netherlands!

Doubtful we will see any joint exercises between Qatar and Saudi Arabia, least not anytime soon.

Malaysia haven't operated the F-5 for a few years now. This replacement is as VSMUT indicated for the MiG-29s, which were slated to be retired in 2010 and have soldiered on.

Gripen is about last on the list. While the rumor for years was the SH was in front the last couple it has moved to the Rafale and Eurofighter. As with the Su-30s, which were essentially paid for in palm oil, Malaysia is looking for a similar arrangement, hence why the potential preference now for the Eurofighter. Given how long this competition has been going it could well be another 5 years before they make a decision.
