France to buy more Rafales, A330 tankers

Mon Feb 12, 2018 10:17 am

France plans to increase its Rafales and A330 MRTT fleets as part of a "modernization program" by 2025.

France has unveiled an ambitious and wide-ranging military modernisation programme that includes the acquisition of additional Dassault Rafale fighters, an all-new fleet of light helicopters and additional aerial refuelling tankers.

...

Under the proposal, Paris intends, by 2025, to have a fleet of 171 Rafales for its air force and navy: up from 143 at the start of the period. The balance of its combat inventory will be made up of 55 upgraded Dassault Mirage 2000Ds.

...

France will also accelerate deliveries of its Airbus Defence & Space A330 multirole tanker transport tanker fleet. Twelve of the aircraft are due to be in service by 2025, as part of an eventual 15-strong inventory: an increase of three units over the dozen Phénix tankers originally envisaged.

There are also talks of building a new aircraft carrier.

Where did the Helo carrier that was withheld from Russia go to? Did it find a new home?

Do you have anything to substantiate on that? Or is it a dog, because it aint Russian?

That pushes the Airbus future fighter well outside of the time frame Germany needs for the Tornado replacement.

It isn't long enough for a start, reactor design is poor, history of engineering issues.

An opinion not held up by everyone:
http://nationalinterest.org/blog/the-bu ... -bad-14379

reactor had issues:
some burning/smoking lagging during commissioning.
excess radiation levels. ( from meantime lowered limits. outch :-)

Building was stopped 4 times on budgetary issues.
i.e it is a mass grave for Franc and Euros.

not a bad outcome for a single ship
versus mass production experience US carriers.

not looked at how cost compares.

Nope it’s a dog because it was poorly designed, it used small submarine reactors rather than the right sized reactors, it is to short, it has multiple design issues, its probably spent more time in refit than it has at sea. Russia has nothing to do with this, this is just your stupidity rearing it’s head yet again. The French should have built there version of the British CVF, they spent tens of millions on design amd engineering and have nothing to show for it. By now they would have had two carriers, or nearly two carriers.

CDG was ordered more than 30 years ago and was launched more than 20 years ago, nothing to do with the British carriers.

If it's possible to do 2 new ships for a reasonable cost I think it would be a good thing for various reasons, it doesn't mean that CDG would be retired, simply that each ship would have slack.
