Luftwaffe books tuition from ADAC

Sat Dec 23, 2017 5:09 pm

Luftwaffe Helicopter pilots will get initial tuition and do currency hours on EMS BK117 owned by the German automobile club ADAC
because existing NH90 and Tiger are unreliable/unavailable.
~6000 hours for ~€20m.

Only heard this on the radio on my way home today.
Apparently nothing on the web yet.

I do wonder what kind of lie Ms von der Leyen is hatching here.

I'm not sure there is much that is too sinister here, commercial basic flight training is becoming more common in western militaries, and we know Germany has struggled to sustain their current fleet of fighter jets, I'd say a lack of appropriate funding has struck the rotary wing fleets as well.

alternatively, for some military forces the respective buckets of money are reasonably fixed so, my opinion only, in this case the sustainment budget may be short of funds but the training budget has plenty and it is easier to fund training at a private school than move the money to the sustainment budget line.

I could understand that The C160, SeaKing and such had availability problems.
Senile items kept alive with massive transplantation and skingraft ops.

But I have difficulty accepting that more or less brand new models have ZERO availability.
This can't be type connected but must be caused by base mismanagement of maintenance capabilities.
( competent workforce, acceptable ( and well managed) supply in spare parts.)
We don't hear of similar problems from other nations.( NH90, Tiger, A400M : nothing works for the Luftwaffe.)

If you order the cheapest maintenance regime and refuse to buy any spare parts, it is normal that once a part fails, the part is returned to the OEM for service and you wait until the repaired part is shipped back to your unit.

What I said: it is an ORG thing and not as Ms von der Leyen postulates a PRODUCT issue.
( that about the "sinister" aspect.)
