Reminds me of these two classics of an RAAF Hornet taken from the back of a C-130:

just inspecting if they cleaned out the hold properly.

This looks nearer than it really was, right? 30+m nearer and the peel off wouldn't have worked.

Would have stunk if a stuck pallet came off the rails.

Filmed in 2005, RAF Tornado F3's down south, something a bit different going on with the RAF C-130 crew in one brief segment when they film a F.3 peeking into their aircraft;

Would've been the first air-to-air kill of an Il-76!

The Iranians had a Il-76 that was modified into a AEW aircraft that crashed back in 2009. Some sources indicate that the aircraft had an mid-air collision with another Iranian fighter that was escorting it during a military parade.

Going further, did the Il76 score any kills with it's tail gun? Why did the Soviets add a tail gun to a strategic airlifter? Are there any photos from that position?

Pretty much all the photos you see here of Mig-31, Su-24 etc refuelling were taken from that position. Also, you can shoot ground targets with it like in this video :-) . But originally I think it was a last means of self defense against fighters.

Thanks for the video. Not a chance to hit a ground target and you'd never see a fighter. ;) I noticed that at :40 the cartage casings were falling away. This is the first I've seen of such a disposal.
I'll start a new, off topic thread featuring your video.
Thanks,
Cary

Here's a video of the Danish PM giving a flight of F-16s a wave from the back of a Fat Albert:

Did the Il-76 score any kills....?
I'm pretty sure the answer is no, primarily because I cannot think of any conflict where Il-76s would have come into direct contact with enemy fighter a/c.

Why did the Soviets add a tail gun to a strategic airlifter?
Like the C-17, the Il-76 was designed as both a strategic and a tactical airlifter. Hence if history had taken a different path, as a tactical delivery platform, it may well have found itself in hostile airspace and at lower altitudes subject to attack from hostile a/c.
I'm sure I don't need to point out that the tactical transport it supplemented/replaced, the Antonov An-12, also featured a defensive tail gun position.
Indeed the An-12 tail gun bears a remarkable resemblance to the tail gun on a Tu-95.

Here is a view of the back office, but I'm not 100% sure which of the above types it represents.

He's right about not hitting a ground target, and he may have a point about fighters opting to use an expensive missile, precisely because of the threat posed by this gun position.
Remember; USAF B-52s continued with a tail gun fitment until final removing this option in 1991; at the very least it stops enemy fighters from taking a "free-shot", and forces them to use a missile that could be jammed.

Don't forget Soviet 23mm cannon for bomber and transport defense had flare and chaff Rounds available too. You don't have to shoot down a fighter, just blind the missiles.

I was alluding to the link in the OP where a fighter emerged from beneath cargo plane after the load was dropped. No one here knew it was there until it emerged.
If a fighter was attacking that cargo plane it would come in at an odd angle at a very high rate of speed. I doubt that the rear gunner would get off a shot and may not even see the attacker before it was too late.

Spacepope, OT but take a look at post #6 in the nearby Gun Casing thread. Ozair dug it up in post #2.

Thanks,
Cary

Absolutely correct.
But then that means the attacking fighter is relying more & more on "deflection shooting" due to these strange angles, and hurried due to the high closing speeds, with the inevitable result that far fewer rounds will hit their target. That being so, the threat posed by the gun position has done it's job. :checkmark:

In comparison, lining up directly behind an unarmed C-130, taking your time to get it fully in your sights, and pouring gunfire into it at zero deflection angle is going to be a piece of cake.
The unarmed C-130 can make life difficult by executing violent evasive manoeuvers, but basically it is merely putting off the inevitable.

Caryjack wrote:

Only if the Il-76 was left high and dry on its own, without even AWACS or ground radar support.
And it wouldn't just be the rear gunner with his eyes peeled.
If any crew member spotted an incoming fighter, or were alerted by radar, standard evasion procedure (if there was time) would be to turn the Il-76 so that the tail gunner was lined up for a shot.
Obviously a stealth fighter or anything hugging the ground might creep up undetected. But again, the gun postion is fulfilling it's role as a deterrent, and making life difficult for the enemy.

In that respect, the tail gun doesn't even need to be manned, and the "guns" could be two broomsticks, painted black.

Obviously I fully accept that a determined attack by almost any fighter will ultimately bring down an Il-76, whilst he is wasting time avoiding the tail and getting into position for a clean shot, he himself might fall victim to friendly MIGs coming in fast.
