Quite the shopping spree, F-15's, Rafale's, and now Eurofighters.

Didn’t they just sign up for another 12 Rafale’s?

Isn't there a well known book: "How to buy friends and influence nations"?

The article says the delivery will start in 2022. Are there so many Eurofighters going to be delivered till than to keep the lines open?

They are coming just from the UK line which is still delivering to the UK and has started deliveries to Oman. The production rate has been slowed and the 2000 jobs that are being cut at the BAE plant won't be coming back so there will probably be some slack in the system. Qatar also probably doesn't have the ability to receive these jets before that timeframe. Not enough aircrew, ground crew and perhaps even facilities to house them given the Rafales are arriving now and F-15s are expected from 2019 to 2022.

Ok, thanks.

12 more Rafales, brings the total to 36.
http://abcnews.go.com/International/wir ... a-51636977

72 F-15QA's
36 Rafales
24 Typhoons

So 122 fighters in 2024 or up from 12(!) Mirage 2000-5.

It is only 36 F-15s but with the option of an additional 36. From Reuters,

Qatar’s Ministry of Defense said on Wednesday the country signed a deal to buy F-15 fighter jets from the United States for $12 billion.

U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and representatives from Qatar were set to meet Wednesday to seal the agreement, a source familiar with the deal told Reuters. Bloomberg News reported the deal was for 36 jets.

The sale will increase security cooperation and interoperability between the U.S. and Qatar, the Pentagon said in an emailed statement on Wednesday.

Defense Secretary Mattis and Qatari Minister of State for Defense Affairs Khalid al-Attiyah also discussed the current state of operations against the ISIS and the importance of de-escalating tensions so all partners in the gulf region can focus on next steps in meeting common goals, the Pentagon added.

In November, the United States approved possible sale of up to 72 F-15QA aircraft to Qatar for $21.1 billion. Boeing Co is the prime contractor on the fighter jet sale to the Middle East nation.

The FMS case when released stated 72 but that is because it has to cover the highest possible amount.

In all seriousness, what the hell does Qatar need that many aircraft for ?

Along with all the other equipment they are buying, is being in the armed forces the only future means of employment for Qatari nationals ?

Or are we just watching Qatar spend billions everywhere so they still have some "friends" outside the Gulf ?

Perhaps a bit of both. Qatar is completely surrounded by their enemies (Saudi Arabia, UAE, etc).

Most Qatari nationals don't need to work but I imagine like the UAEAF the Qatari Air Force probably has a very high proportion of millionaires.

Buying political influence is a very large part (>95%) of this acquisition.
