Is the "overhead break to landing" a daytime/VFR only procedure?

Tue Nov 28, 2017 6:42 pm

I'm just wondering if the cool "overhead break" or "pitchout" maneuver performed by jet fighters returning to base is a daytime/VFR only procedure. I've seen these several times during the day only because I was driving past or near a jet fighter base while on a road trip, but because I don't live anywhere even close to an air base, I don't know if, for example, F15's or F16's (or F18's in the case of the Navy or Marine Corps,) perform the overhead breaks at night as well, as long as visibility is good (obviously.) I got to wondering if "spatial disorientation" might prevent/prohibit the overhead break maneuver at night.

TIA for any information.
I'm already insane but I'm not crazy!

Generally speaking, the overhead is performed day and night. There might be local restrictions at a base/airport due to noise or some other factor. But, it you have the ceiling and vis, you can report initial for the overhead day or night.
If we weren't all crazy we'd all go insane!
