Congratulations Royal Norwegian Air Force! This is the beginning of a new era. First new fighter aircraft since 1980. 48 5th generation aircraft (4 will remain in the US) should be plenty to maintain air superiority in our portion of the North Atlantic.

Congratulations to The Royal Norwegian Air Force. I look forward to see the F-35 live in Norway. The F-35 is a good option for Norway, and I agree with JetBuddy that this should be plenty to maintain air superiority.

I helped build the center wing of every single one of those. It's funny though, they normally do some kind of celebration of something here, but this is the first time I am hearing about this lol.

Congrats to them.

The arrival was delayed by a day due to tanker availability; they were originally scheduled to arrive on November 2nd.

Congrats. Even if they look a bit odd and cost far too much :-) I'm glad though there's a great air force in Norway.

Hopefully it stops at 40, it’s a complete waste of taxpayer money, especially when the Navy is underfunded and has had to canabalise a vessels for parts to keep the others running.

In my opinion we need to fund both the Navy as well as get all 52 F35. We can afford it, and it raises the bar to attack us.

But these aren’t an air superiority fighter, it’s a bomb truck, not much of a deterrent imo.

And significantly better at essentially everything than the aircraft it is replacing. Norway could not find a better replacement for the F-16 than the F-35A.

Does Norway need a better aircraft than the F-16, I disagree with my tax dollars being wasted on them. I hope the funding stops at 40.

Politically it appears that there has been broad support for the best plane for Norway for some time, including the now PM with a statement while in opposition in 2008 below.

But opposition Conservative Party leader Erna Solberg said: “This will not be decided by opinion polls, it will be decided by whichever is technically the best plane.”

Norway and Sweden practice quite a lot together and it will actually be exciting to see how its "air superior" is or how much "significantly better" it is against Gripen E/F;)I'm sure it will be very valuable for our pilots with these exercises ;)

The deterrent factor is that even if Russia decides to set up a S400 to shut down airspace, Norway has a plane that can still operate and maintain air superiority. The deterrence is also that if a country threatens Norway, they won't be able to know where the Norwegian aircraft are and can get hit back and never see where the shots came from. Never mind their ability to integrate easily with other NATO forces. A mass of 5th gen fighters spread across Europe is a potent deterrence.

I read in Forsvarets Forum that the Royal Norwegian Air Force expects up to five aircraft having to be written off due to crashes or other things during their lifetime, which is expected to last until 2054. That's 10% of the fleet.

I still don't understand that after all these years of testing and hundreds orders from first-world governments/forces that people can still be so naive. Fighter jets aren't bought with a Price-Is-Right spin of the wheel, hundreds of millions of dollars and years are spent coming to the conclusion that the F35 is the best and only fighter for future Air Forces.

Unless you are in Canada then its purely political. I'm glad Norway doesn't have their heads up their asses like we do in Canada.

That is reasonably standard for these types of acquisitions. If we look at when Canada was selecting the Classic Hornet they choose between it and the F-16. They calculated an attrition rate for each and the funding to buy enough replacement airframes for the expected lifetime of the type.

Military aviation is dangerous and continues to be so, especially when aircrew train for as realistic a scenario as possible. The other side is just plain human error which by USAF metrics accounts for upwards of 80% of accidents.

Well we have lost / written off something like 16-17 F-16's since 1980 so the number for the F-35 seems a bit too reasonable ... We shall see

I started it yes. I asked for the deletion of the thread, but the moderators have apparently only deleted the first post and didn't understand that it was the whole thread I wanted deleted. ... :-)
