B-52H Vertical Stabilizer Loss (where is the tail?)

Wed Nov 01, 2017 5:48 pm

Hey all,

In reference to the B-52H that lost its vertical stabilizer during the low level test flight near Mora, NM in 1964, does anyone know what became of the actual section of vertical stabilizer? I am curious if it was ever located, and if so, was it recovered or not? If it was located but not recovered, does anyone have a location? I wanted to look at some satellite photos of the location and see if I can spot it on the ground if it's still there!

Thanks!

According to this fascinating video, the stabilizer broke off near Aguilar, CO or near East Spanish Peak, CO. It might help if you started your search near here instead of NM.

I watched that video and it sparked my interest so I dug a little deeper and found that the exact location was closer to 5 miles east of Mora, NM. I wish I could find out more information about this.

Can you let us in on how you know it was near Mora when the vertical stabilizer came unglued?

The story I was always told, when I was there, is that it’s the tail in front the then ops building at Minot AFB. (Only the top 3-4’ of it). Lat 48.4194 Lon -101.3460
