From the videos that are available, it seems like a classic case of misjudged altitude/speed for an air show display, with not enough altitude left for "catching" the plane after a loop. He would not be the first extremely experienced pilot to cut his margins too closely, in what seem to be slightly murky meteo conditions.

OTOH, him getting into that situation might also have been due to some technical malfunction. The investigation will show.

Either way, my salute and respect goes to the chap who died in execution of his duties. And yes, airshows are part of those duties, IMHO: if no one outside the military ever gets to see those magnificent machines in action, how could the general public begin to appreciate the effort put into modern air policing and defence? R.I.P.
