Where? (C-54s-- says 1942)

Thu Jul 13, 2017 1:56 am

Guess Douglas built C-54s at Long Beach, didn't they? First pic is presumably the LA area somewhere, but where?

The river should help

A not-too-smoggy day at LGB? With some A-20s.

C-54s were built at either Santa Monica or the airfield now known as O'Hare.

Some great old pics. Did not know about the OD connection. Was the a Douglas facility or someone else build the airplane under contract like Ford, Bell or ?

Note the national insignia with red centre, which was dropped fairly soon after the USA's entry into the war, I think. This would tend to support the 1942 date.

If those were built at/near Orchard Field, the river could be the Des Plaines. The course of that river has been so modified by man over the last 100 years that it would be difficult to match up to a current map (I tried with Google Earth). Not sure if there was that much smog to the northeast of Chicago in the 1940s though (downtown and the east side, yes, but probably not in "far out" Rosemont).

If the 1942 date is correct, suspect it has to be California. No C-54s were completed at ORD until 1943-- right?
