USN F/A-18E shot down Syrian SU-22

Mon Jun 19, 2017 3:23 pm

Happened on the 17 of June and as far as I can recall this is the first US air-to-air kill since quite a long time...

From Operation Ineherent Resolve web page:

"At approximately 4:30 p.m. Syria time, June 18, Pro-Syrian regime forces attacked the Syrian Democratic Forces-held town of Ja'Din, South of Tabqah, wounding a number of SDF fighters and driving the SDF from the town.

Coalition aircraft conducted a show of force and stopped the initial pro-regime advance toward the SDF-controlled town.

Following the Pro-Syrian forces attack, the Coalition contacted its Russian counterparts by telephone via an established ‘de-confliction line’ to de-escalate the situation and stop the firing.

At 6:43 p.m., a Syrian regime SU-22 dropped bombs near SDF fighters south of Tabqah and, in accordance with rules of engagement and in collective self-defense of Coalition partnered forces, was immediately shot down by a U.S. F/A-18E Super Hornet.

Ja'Din sits approximately two kilometers north of an established East-West SDF-Syrian Regime de-confliction area"

No mention whether this was an AIM 120, AIM 9 or 20mm kill, would be interesting to know. Russians were moderately upset.

You can watch the movie "Top Gun" Zeke, it will show you everything you need to know.

Thanks to VFA-31 or VFA-87, there are some good guy SF folks alive and well today. Here's to hoping they keep with tradition and paint a flag on the side of the Boeing F/A-18E.

Thanks for the laughs, just like Flying High, Flight, and Sully accurately represents the industry.

Yep, F-15E crew did that. Doesn't count as it is a "drone".

Not anytime soon with Russia backing Assad. Look likes the long term outlook will be partitioning of the country.

I have...it won't be released for awhile (if ever). But it definitely was a sight to behold.

If CNN is to be believed the US aircraft first fired an AIM-9 which was decoyed away before launching the AMRAAM.

Perhaps that is why AWACSooner said the video would be a good watch.

Classic CNN: First the page loads with a preview frame of a Flanker.
Then a video auto-plays with a Blackjack.
Then I realize the video is completely unrelated to the article itself, which was about a Fitter.

It's interesting to learn if the off record sources are correct that flares still have at least some effectiveness against the current generation IR-guided missiles.

Or, the AIM-9 was fired at the extreme limit of its range.

The article insinuates that the US aircraft had conducted multiple WVR actions to move the Syrian aircraft off its target so I doubt range was an issue.

There have been several reports that the Sukhoi was shot down from only .6 miles away, including the CNN article. If anything, that almost seems on the short side for the AIM-9 as well as the AMRAAM.
