Russians Checking in on Area 51, Edwards AFB, Ft Irwin and more

Take a look at this flight path. Looks to start at Tonopah Test Range, fly around Area 51, then over to Nellis AFB, then to Ft Irwin, then on to Travis AFB. This is strange...... Does anyone have any idea as to what's going on here, and if this is typical? I was sent another shot of the flight path yesterday, where the same aircraft was just buzzing around the Bay Area all day.

It's part of the Open Skies treaty; we have similar reciprocal rights to conduct overflights and surveillance over Russian territory as well.

Plenty of notice ahead of time. They will put the secret squirrel stuff undercover, leave stuff to be inspected out in the sun, no test flights that day.

Anything else they want to know they will just ask Trump.

Thanks, I spent a lot of time looking over radar tracks for all of the Open Skies planes. Pretty cool!

Thanks for the help, and the laugh! Now if only he'd share info on the B-21 with us, the people paying for it.......

While Area 51 remains inside the restricted airspace in the Nellis range it's not unheard of that an airliner will pass within visual distance of this airport. On at least two occasions in the 80's while flying from SAN to SLC in the early hours (0700 PST) we were handed offto Nellis radar and given direct SLC only to come within visual distance of the Area 51 airport. When nellis was questioned about the name of the airport at 2:oo O'clock they either replied, there is no airport, but turn left XX degrees, direct SLC when able, or "you can see that airport?", turn left 20 degrees". Better one, and more recently is when the airport showed up in the FMC NDB for a monthly revision. We don't live in a perfect world!

My friend is a Russian, now a naturalized US citizen. He was driving around in Nevada trying to find Area 51 I think. They stopped him and interrogated him. He thought he could just drive to the base. He is actually a theoretical physicist who speaks with a heavy Russian accent. On the one hand, I am happy they let my friend go. On the other hand, they had some good reasons to interrogate him lol.

There are nice big clear signs that tell you you are on restricted land and turn back now, then you get to the signs that say go any further and you could be shot.
