More Westover observations

Thu May 04, 2017 8:04 pm

The little bit I post these days surrounds military goings-on up and down the Connecticut River Valley. I often observe KC-135 training runs in the upper valley over east-central Vermont, and lots of C-5B traffic directly over my office in Amherst Mass.

First, being outside often, it is very clear now when a C-5M is overhead vs. a B model. Very different engine pitch and noise level (this from a guy who watched Starlifters come and go as a kid in NJ). I had an M fly over me while out running recently and I only noticed the aircraft, not the noise at all.

But more interestingly, I was outside earlier this week and saw what I thought was a C-5 doing training laps up over the Notch (my employer owns to old cold war bunker there) and it was a rare KC-10. The 10 then proceeded to make several laps over the Holyoke range/Hadley/Amherst as C-5s do when training. Was this a total one-off, or is there some reason Westover crews might be getting familiarized with this this type? Maybe just a check-out after some non-routine maintenance?
