TU 154 to tour USA

Fri Apr 14, 2017 12:40 am

It looks like the Open Skies TU 154 will be making the rounds around the US with a Dulles arrival soon. They also may have a TU 204 as well participating.. Wisconsin , Tennesee , Montana, Arizona are just a few planned stops.. That TU 154 would be an awesome spotting!

Looks like most of it's US portion of the trip is completed. Over the US from April 10th-15th and then over Canada from April 18th-22nd

I wondered why I saw a TU-154 taking off from Wright-Patterson this morning and what on Earth it was doing there.

That's odd. TU-204-100 SM was displayed everywhere.
I don't remember Tu-154 M in this role.
I can be wrong though.

It is a bit odd, although the Tu-154M did the job before the newer aircraft was put into service. It's presumably been retained as part of the fleet.

The whole exercise is a bit pointless now as satellites can do the job down to extremely fine resolutions and even see through cloud cover. More diplomatic than anything I expect.

It creates stability and trust by allowing countries that do not have spy satellites to participate. Meanwhile countries that do have satellites do not have to share...

Yep. For example, Canada uses a C-130 Hercules fitted with a special sensor pod created from a converted C-130 external fuel tank. This pod is shared with a number of other countries, and is fitted as required on that country's C-130. The Swedish use a converted Saab 340, and the British had a HS Andover similarly fitted (they now lease the Swedish Saab 340's for Open Skies work every now and then).
