Tillerson in Europe C-40B

Tue Apr 11, 2017 2:17 pm

I saw video this morning of Sec of State Tillerson's arrival in Moscow in what looks like a C-40B. He was in Italy for a G7 foreign ministers' meeting before this.

Question: Why not use the C-32? Wouldn't the C-40B have to refuel in flight between ADW and Italy?

I don't believe the C-40B is inflight refueling capable, is it? Not sure I'd want to refuel it with the Secretary of State on board, except in an emergency.

The excuse he gives to the press as to why they cannot come along is that the plane is too small.

C-32s have growing reliability issues. Look at how many times Hillary was delayed, or even had a diversion while onboard.

After watching how certain reporters behave around him, I don't blame him for not letting them tag along.

Don't put the press core in the center of the discussion. Reporters report about politicians, they monitor and check politicians. It is most important role in a democracy.

The C-40 B/C provides safe, comfortable and reliable transportation for U.S. leaders to locations around the world. The C-40B's primary customers are the combatant commanders and C-40C customers include members of the Cabinet and Congress. The aircraft also perform other operational support missions.

Maximum Range: 4,500 to 5,000 nautical miles (based on payload) unrefueled range

The C-40B is a variant of the BBJ1 which has more than enough range to fly DC to just about anywhere

The E-4B has routinely done in-flight refueling with the Secretary of Defense aboard. Robert Gates wrote about it in his autobiography. During refueling operation, you can apparently hear the fuel gushing through the transfer lines.

I agree, that's why I said certain. I was thinking about Andrea Mitchell from NBC.

I understand, but I would not do it at all. Politicians can't choose whom report about them, nor should they be able to ;-)

As of mid-2015, when I was last qualified in the KC-10 as a boom operator, the C-40 is not air-refueling capable.

Yep. No boom receptacle. Of the smaller jets being operated, only two of the C-32B's are capable of inflight refueling, and those two C-32B's are usually associated with special missions.

Those two are especially challenging receivers - no lead-in lines, or any other AR markings or lights for that matter.

Aaah! But "blame the journalists" is the favorite game for RW defenders! :)

As far as the 757 goes, it has a PATS aux tank system installed which gives it about a 12.5 hour endurance.
