In the current climate hell would have to freeze over for Iran to be allowed to buy fighter jets.

Because the UN arms embargo on Iran is still in effect, and the last thing the Russians or the Chinese want is to be sanction busting.

Because both Russia and China are members of the United Nations and do NOT want to risk an arm and a leg for a lousy tiny fighter deal with Iran. China is governed by very smart people. Not gonna happen.

It hasn't stopped French firm Sagem supplying thermal sights for Russian T-90s and electro optical infra-red systems for Russian Ka-52 attack helicopters, and Thales supplying thermal-imaging fire control systems in defiance of the EU arms control ban to Russia.

He's talking about UN sanctions on Iran, not Russia. There are no UN sanctions on Russia, just a loose alliance of Western/NATO countries trying to punish Moscow to varying degrees. In fact, France and Germany have been largely reluctant to go as far the USA in sanctioning Russia.

FWIW, the sanctions have had an effect on military co-operation. India is facing issues with contracting for modernisation and upgrades because they want to integrate Western systems on Russian platforms and contract through a Russian prime (Rosoboronexport or directly with a Russian OEM), and it is proving difficult. Programmes impacted include the MiG-29 upgrade and Ka-28 upgrade, and there are probably dozens more that haven't made it to the public domain yet. Russian firms are also having trouble receiving payments and supplying bank guarantees for new bids, as no bank that is even tangentially connected to the west will touch them.

Cheers
