The DRDO AEW&CS platform was first showcased back in 2013.

Only the electronics are indegenous. The primary platform is an ERJ145.

How many they are going to produce more?

Also I heard Embraer got an integrity clause waiver. If integrity clause is not that important why can't they take rest of VVIP choppers.

The integrity clause was there pre-2012 when St.Antony sat in the Defense Ministry. It went out with him.

We shouldnt ask questions about integrity and inane stuff like that! If Dear Leader has approved a deal, it must be pure!

According to IADN, DRDO will make only a few more ERJ 145 based AWEC&S. Its purchasing 6 A330 for $3 billion.

So far only KW3555 and 3556 will be delivered. I was at the handing over ceremony. 3556 will go to the squadron first (No. 200 Sqn, a new raising) and will be followed shortly by 3555. DRDO/CABS has an in-house airframe that will be used for development and testing of future improvements, upgrades and new systems (like a maritime patrol suite).

Didnt the inhouse airframe, an HS748 crash years back? Did they get a new one?

This aircraft is ancient history- it crashed long back, near VOYK. I remember reading about it in Abdul Kalam's 'Turning Points'. The entire crew was killed. We had not mastered the struts for joining the radome to the fuselage, and keep it there in the face of wind resistance. One of these struts broke and the radome took off the entire tail.

As I said, the project is ancient history. We have replaced it with a desi Radome on a Brazilian Embraer EMB-145. The entire package is called 'DRDO AEW&CS'.

Yep, the 748 is long gone. There are three EMB-145s in India. Two for the IAF, one for CABS for current AEW&C dev, and then for any and all future airborne sensor dev.

I hope someone went to jail for that!

Doesn't quite work like that around here.

Look, if scientific stuff goes wrong, there is no precedent to send people to jail. AT THE MOST somebody loses their seniority, job or gets transferred. It could have been an honest mistake- we in India lag big- time in small things like nuts and bolts and struts. If there is design, then we lack metallurgy. If there is metallurgy, then we lack fabrication facilities.

That's why I say- there is no point on claiming a huge economy on the back of intangible stuff like 'software' and 'apps', and have poor manufacturing and chemicals industries.
