New Antonov AN-132 transport unveiled (photos)

Sun Jan 08, 2017 6:32 pm

http://bmpd.livejournal.com/2335238.html

Its essentially a modernized AN-32 with western avionics and engines and a redesigned fuselage. Saudi Arabia has already placed a large order for them. Good looking little plane...

"AN-132 is based on the airframe of the aircraft AN-26 / AN-32, but uses the Western system of production: turboprop engines Pratt & Whitney Canada PW150A with six-bladed composite propellers Dowty Propellers R408, APU Hamilton Sundstrand, a complex on-board avionics Honeywell Primus Epic integrated Modular Avionic system 2.0, Crouzet cabin management system, crew seats Ipeco, Zodiac integrated oxygen system, life support systems (SLE IPS, SARD) Liebherr Aerospace."

So they grafted the nose of an An-72 onto the An-32, and fitted it with the engines of the Q-400. And they managed to do go all the way from project announcement to rollout in just a year.

But at least it looks good :D

It does look great, and kind of familiar of other modern transport planes as well...

Looks awesome! But the nose profile looks radically different from the An-32's i have seen.

Wonder if Antonov can offer some refit programme for existing An32 operators. The Indian Air Force operates 100+ of these which are ageing.

A modernised AN32 with PW150 engines could just see these workhorses soldier on for another 30 years with the IAF!

It's the An-72 / -74 nose. It's not going to be retrofittable. But a glass cockpit should be possible, if it wasn't for the fact that India has recently upgraded it's An-32s.

Looking at the wings and engine mountings, it looks more like an An-24 development than an An-32. Retrofitting the underwing-mounted PW-150 to the An-32 which has over-wing mounted engines might be problematic.

Here in the states, that would take *at least* five years at the very minimum.

That's my worry as well. They went from project announcement to final assembly in just 6 months, and roll-out after another 6. That's just too little to properly test and certify the design. Short-cuts must have been made somewhere in the process. Even Airbus and Boeing couldn't stuff 10 additional seats into a 737 or A320 in that little time.

Well it's probably not certified and will only be certified to some form of military standard, not an EASA/FAA certified passenger plane.

Maybe that would be a nice tactical lift for some of our European airforces, and perhaps even better than the Hercs in France and (probably) Germany

Hello: If authorities consider that this a/c may apply for grandfather rights respect to An-32?, certification process will be short. This is very common, for instance with B737 MAX, which have so few in common with a B737-100

If they took An-24/32 frame, added PW engines and avionics - it would be entirely possible.
To me it looks like the old good AN-24. The nose is irrelevant.
I would be happy if it helps Antonov to survive.

Looks to be a rugged, dependable platform, especially in the Maritime Patrol role. If design quirks, early teething issues and after sales support are adequately addressed, then Antonov would have a modern, westernized, compact competitor against the CN235/C295, and a cheaper alternative vs the Spartan. Production outside Ukraine could sidestep the political situation there (hopefully without raising its price much)...and pave the way for further export orders. With Saudi financing, all that may just be achievable. Antonov/Taqnia might have a winner in their hands as a result :!:

The Xian MA60 and MA600 both use the PW-127 that also powers the ATR.

Hopefully, it wouldn't suffer the same problems as the latter and that the similarities would end there. :crossfingers:

Antonov An-132D transport aircraft makes first flight

Thu Apr 06, 2017 6:04 am

Link/Source: http://atwonline.com/airframes/antonov- ... 5dbf949196

"The aircraft, which was rolled out in Kyiv at the end of December 2016, is a modernized version of the Soviet-built An-32 developed in the 1970s."

"The An-132D is intended to operate on short- and medium-haul routes, the manufacturer said in a statement. “The new aircraft will perform a variety of tasks, such as the transportation of raw materials, mail and other cargo, including bulk cargo […] and light self-propelled and non-self-propelled vehicles weighing up to 9.2 tonnes."

Are there any governments / militaries that have orders placed.
Will this aircraft sell and what is it's closest competition?

Wow. Love the 'mean' look that comes by putting an An-140 nose on the mighty An-32. Certainly a powerful, capable beast. Kudos to Antonov!

It is most impressive what Antonov can do. Currency crisis? No problem. War in 1/3rd of their country? No problem. Largest customer (Russia) slashing orders? No problem, we'll sell to the Saudis and work with the Chinese...

Congrats to Antonov and I hope that they keep making some of the most amazing aircraft in the world!

Ukraine can’t catch a break at the moment. Apparently the suspension is due to Saudi Arabia improving relations with Russia. Anyone have any ideas on potential new partners for Antonov for co-development? Before the C-295 announcement I would have said India was a possibility but likely not now.

Ukraine Suspends Joint Venture with Saudi Arabia to Build An-132 Aircraft

Ukraine has suspended a joint venture with Saudi Arabia to produce the An-132 military transport aircraft.

President of Ukraine Antonov State Company, Alexander Donets, which manufactures the aircraft, announced on Friday that the company will continue to build the vehicles but with a new partner.

“In the framework of this project, an An-32D was built and tests began, but for reasons not related to the Antonov company, this process has stopped. There have been changes in the project partners in Saudi Arabia,” Donets said.

In February 2016, Saudi Arabia signed agreements with a number of companies including Ukraine’s Antonov to establish five organisation specialised in the transfer and localisation of advanced technologies in the fields of military and civilian aircrafts, satellites, radars and clean energy.

King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) and the Antonov company planned a joint venture to build a total of 80 aircrafts, some of them in Ukraine, and the others in Saudi Arabia.

The Antonov An-132 is an advanced version of the An-32 cargo plane.

In December 2016, the first model of An-132 flew over Ukraine in the presence of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Saudi representatives.

Observers believe the suspension of the joint venture is a result of the Kingdom’s rapprochement with Russia.

Last year, Ukraine offered Turkey the chance to redevelop the An-70 into the propfan An-77 and the turbofan An-178. I don't know whether Turkey accepted the offer, but if they did, maybe they'd be interested in another conversion project.

They painted themselves into a corner with the westernization. It will now be in direct competition with western offerings, and I doubt it stands much of a chance there. Many traditional customers will likely be turned off by western components. The Il-112 will be more attractive to eastern customers, the C-295 and C-27J more attractive in the west.

If they can afford them, Ukraine could probably use 20-30 aircraft.

Other than that, it could sell in dribs and drabs to small operators around the world. Mexico, should they ever need to replace the An-32s. Various US government agencies. Possibly some specialist airlines that already fly An-26s, An-32s, An-74s, DHC-4T or similar (like Motor Sich Airlines or Antonov Airlines). Airlines supporting mining operations in South East Asia (Papua in particular).

On the positive side, development is probably close to done. It has been flying for over 2 years already. It will cost next to nothing for Ukraine to finish it alone.

Another problem is that westernization drastically pushes up the price of the aircraft, further limiting its appeal. The one positive trait of Antonov is they can produce very small quantities of aircraft and not go bankrupt like a Western manufacturer would.

Unfortunately I don’t think this aircraft type would be a priority for Ukraine right now.

Agree there are multiple small militaries/Governments that would take a few at a time but I think they need a marque customer to take 30+ at which point the dribs and drabs will start flowing.

Not sure how far along it is, I haven’t seen anything to suggest it is close to being finished. If Antonov is seeking a new partner to continue co-development it may not be as far along as you suggest.

Not at that power rating; the only other alternative is the Rolls Royce AE 2100, and that version already has been developed as the An-32B-300, with no takers.
