Has Germany used anything for Open Skies since they lost their TU-154?

Interesting, I didn't know about this stuff. Here's Wiki's writeup on the aircraft in use for the treaty:

Yes, it's a Turbo, and will burn JP-5.

I expect they're either hired out other nation's aircraft. Or been provided one by the nation being inspected which seems to be an option under the treaty.

As far as I know it is a A319ACJ - maybe VW should give it for free and the government will stop further investigations

No, they used aircraft from allied partner most likely the USAF C135. As it is reported in the German Media all the other aircraft in use become really old so Germany hopes it can rent out its new aircraft in return when other nations retire their aging aircraft.

Also the A319 is supposed to be used as MEDEVAC or transport aircraft if not used for Open Skies.

Isn't Italy getting rid of one or two of their A319CJ?
They are supposed to be getting an A350-500 from Etihad. It´s already been painted in the colours of the Italian Air Force but the Air Force lacks trained pilots and it hasn´t been delivered yet.
However I think they want to reduce their A319 fleet when the A345 comes in the line

Doesn't the Luftwaffe already have 2-4 A-319CJs? Yeah, I know they may be VIP aircraft, but one of them could be a duel role airplane, open skies/VIP.

Better yet, the USAF has one open skies OC-135B parked at DM, it still has most of the equipment needed for the mission (the USAF has an operational OC-135B), and the OC-135Bs are the longest ranged of all the open skies aircraft. That will be useful when flying over Russia.

That article is really out of date. It says Russia uses a TU-154 but just a few inches to the right there is a picture of a Russian TU-214, which, if I'm not mistaken replaced the TU-154 several years ago.

I wonder how long we'll continue to see C-135s in service. The KC-135s are obviously going to start disappearing reasonable soon but these OC-135s along with the various RC and WC variants have no apparent replacements on the horizon.

As I said, OC-135B tail #61-2670 is in flyable storage and available. I would rather see her flying for Germany than rotting in the desert. At 55 years old, she is just getting broken in.

I'll support that notion...and base it at GK where there are the NATO E-3s and that Openskies outfit in Niederheid...or were they moved somewhere else in the meantime...(I PCSed out of GK in 2000).

They still use the Tu-154... I saw an Open Skies Tu-154 overfly YHZ on Dec. 20 2015.

How often do these Open Skies AC actually fly? To me it sounds like an incredibly slow and seasonal mission.

How relevant is the open skies mission these days?

It was conceived after the cold war when Russia was emerging from being a very closed society as a way of quickly monitoring each others troop build-ups etc. Although the west and Russia are a long way from seeing eye to eye, surely in the year 2016 ground based and satellite intel must be every bit as effective and way more cost-effective?

It is not seasonal. The individual EU countries must permit 12 Open Skies over flights per year (from each Open Skies signatory), The UK it is 15 flights. But the US and Russia must permit 42 flights per year, from each country.

Because many countries do not have an Open Skies airplane, many "rent" the USAF OC-135B (flown by USAF crews with the renting countries crew also aboard. So the OC-135 is in big demand.

I know, I know, if the OC-135 is in such demand, why is only one flying and one stored? You would have to ask the DOD and State Department that question.

# 61-2670 is in flyable storage at DM, she has most of the OS equipment aboard, but not all of it.

# 61-2672 is active in the USAF inventory and is fully equipped.

There are some 34 countries that are signatories to OS

The OC-135B modifications center around four cameras installed in the rear of the aircraft. Since its primary mission is to take pictures, most of the installed equipment and systems provide direct support to the cameras and the camera operator.
...
Cameras installed include one vertical and two oblique KS-87E framing cameras used for low-altitude photography (approximately 3,000 feet above the ground), and one KA-91C panoramic camera, which scans from side to side to provide a wide sweep for each picture (used for high altitude photography at approximately 35,000 feet).

The data annotation and recording system (DARMS) processes navigational, altitude, time and camera signals to annotate each picture with correct position, altitude, time, roll angle and other information.

VW shoul then rather buy half a dozen 737-800s and donate These to Germany. That would cover all bases...
