Not sure what this has to do with SpaceX, but there we go!

Anyone have any news on the progress of the next FH?

Well I can't tell much from the video:
https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1113613409767964673

But it doesn't look like it blew up
(Well it kinda looks like that but not if you look closely and know what actual launch pad rocket failures look like.)

The flame to the right is the methane flare. They burn excess and unused off because it’s a greenhouse gas. Oxygen is usually vented into the atmosphere.

Let's see if they can improve on their booster landings from 2 to 3.

The center core is the most important. The first time it wasn't as big a deal since it was an old block version and likely not have been reused. But this one is a block 5 and will be reused. As the core, being the most expensive/modified booster, they really want it back in one piece and healthy!

Crazy awesome! That is a beast of a rocket and then to have all the pieces separate and return safely as planned is just amazing.
It is becoming normal now, all the other companies are doing the weird way and just throwing things away!

The angle of the feed makes it look like the main booster may have damaged one of the legs, but still a good landing considering it was coming in at a very fast trajectory. It blows my mind how they can get 2 rockets back within a mile of the pad after having gone over 60+ KM up and about 30 Km downrange. ( they go higher and further prior to the boost back).

I don't know about the main booster, but it seemed to me from the footage that one of the side boosters was sitting slightly at an angle after landing.

Pretty common to have one or two of the legs crush down a bit and induce some lean. It always looks so gentle and graceful, but they call it a “hover-slam” for a reason.

Another bit of good news: both fairings were recovered successfully and are planned for reuse at a later date when SpaceX lofts its StarLink network.

No Mr. Stevens for these recoveries though I don't know if a recovery using the vessel was attempted. The fairings were recovered after a soft ocean landing.
Image

The recovery is not really a surprise for anyone here I am sure, The fairings have been recovered from an ocean several times now, Apparently there is less concern about salt water and no large issue with the touchdown process.

And... I just have to share this pretty awesome picture:
Image

Still doesn't best my favorite pics of the Delta V Heavy (my opinion alone) but pretty damn close!

The last I hear of Mr. Steven was it had lost two arms and its net to misadventure. I don’t think it’s been repaired yet, so I don’t think it was available for a catch attempt.

Sounds to me as though the crew was never able to board the ASDS to secure the stage. Refueling would have been impossible as well.

Need to get the octagrabber working for FH cores.

At least they got the body this time. There's still a lot to be learned from the autopsy as this was the most energetic re-entry to date of a Falcon booster.

I meant that it was literally snapped in half. The landing did not cause that. Tipping over the side and smashing into the bulkhead midway up the body definitely caused that.

Given SpaceX's penchant for euphemism, that 'anomaly' might be just that, or it might be a charred mound where Dragon used to sit...

Hopefully closer to the former, although I'm thinking this is the end of any hope for a crewed flight before the summer is over.

Some more details:

This was the DM-1 capsule which was recovered from the ocean after splashdown. They wanted to use it for the launch abort test.
As these capsules aren't meant to be reused after the saltwater bath, there is a possibility that the water landing is the cause of the malfunction, rather than a fundamental design flaw with Super Draco... At least one hopes.

Rumors are that the capsule is toast.

That orange cloud would have been super nasty stuff, though it was fortunately blown towards the water. (I suppose they wait for favorable wind conditions to perform these tests anyway)

I believe NASA was a bit reticent to have a liquid-fuel propelled escape system. Let's hope this doesn't turn them off the concept altogether..

Elon, normally quite outspoken about their failures, has so far remained quiet.

Yeah a test hardware failure or a problem with test configuration would be the easiest to recover from.

Both Starliner and Crew Dragon use liquid escape systems so NASA doesn't really have a choice here. They'll just have to find the cause and make sure it doesn't happen again.

"Anomaly" is anything deviating from expected regular behavior.

You may want to embellish that with adjectives like "unexpected", "catastrophic", ... :-))))))

A NASA safety panel said on Thursday that Saturday's accident on a SpaceX astronaut capsule happened after eight engines were test fired, but offered scant details on what caused the mishap or the extent of the damage.

Good launch, insertion and deployment into orbit, and recovery of the first stage of the SpaceX CRS-17 mission after a one day hold due to issues with the droneship that caused the previous attempt to be aborted:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQFhX5TvP0M

Also, cool infra-red shot of the first stage on the landing burn, plus a very clean feed of the camera from the first stage as well.
