Great News! The Bahf C-97 Comes To Life.

Sun Dec 28, 2014 5:28 am

The Berlin Airlift Historic Foundation started up the first of four mighty Pratt & Whitney R-4360s. They hope to have this wonderful aircraft back in the air again in 2015.

Link has no news. I had to join the group, we'll see what turns up when that is approved.

Meanwhile I went looking for other sources. Last update on the groups website , Feb 2014, indicated the C-97 should be ready to fly in Sept. Looks like that didn't happen.

Ok, I'm on the FB page. They got #4 running.... Now we need to get #4 running on Doc...

Would be cool to see all these 4 round engine airplanes at the same airshow. Maybe FiFi, Doc, and this C-97 will all make an appearance together next summer....

What FB page are you looking at?

The one I saw (WIX) claimed three engines were fired up.
Number three was the odd cob out, and needs more work...

So you don't know the name of it? I am having no luck finding it. But that might be a good thing.

I know they had the plane, but I didn't know they had a FB page.
Thanks.

More video of the engine runs in December. Looks like the airshow circuit will have a bunch of 4 radial engine Boeings this year....

Excellent! As an avid airshow junkie I hope to see it on the circuit

Also I consider it the youth of the Super Guppy. The B-29 became the KC-97 became the Boeing 377 became the Pregnant Guppy and later the Super Guppy and later still the Mini (and Turbo Mini) Guppy!

Yikes, Safety 3rd! That drop sheet under the aircraft is an accident waiting to happen. Just imagine the damage or injuries that could result from that sheet being sucked up or blown into a running engine.

Otherwise a great achievement. Hope they improve their safety habits and get this bird in the air.

Cheers,

John

I have to agree with you John. Such a great achievement with the potential for it to have gone so very bad. I watched the whole video and was spell-bound by those four Pratt and Whitney engines.

Me too! I was just waiting for that sheet to fly up and go through the props. Odd that, it looked as if was there to catch any oil drips or spills. Just as well they didn't wind those engines up or there would've been much weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth!

I fondly remember airline and military operations at FBU. At that time there was also someone close by with a fire extinguisher during a startup of a recip.

Noticed that as well.

Here's a quad copter video of the run that shows the sheet to good effect.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgEoxSw00cg

It really shows how close to going sideways things really were. Hopefully someone in power at the Berlin Airlift Historic Foundation looks at this and decides on a safer approach to getting this C-97 back in the air. From my perspective this video makes them look very amateurish.

Cheers,

John

As a former R-4360 engine mechanic on the KC/C 97’s in my Air Force days almost 50 years ago the sounds of all 4 engines running and the smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe on starting brought back many memories of working on these engines, they were one massive engine that’s for sure. If you didn’t abuse the engine by running it hard, you could get 1200 hours out of it, run it hard 600 to 800 hours at best.

If I lived closer to Floyd Bennett field I probably would have volunteered to work on their C-97.

It was standard practice to have someone with a fire extinguisher standing near the exhaust pipe during engine start. I did it myself many times when if an engine run was required after we worked on the engine, normally during engine starts for a mission the line crew would man the fire extinguisher.

The C-97 successfully departed Floyd Bennett Field and landed in Toms River, NJ for a short fuel stop before going to Reading, PA. The aircraft is currently sitting in Reading after a safe second flight from Toms River.

I had the chance to drive out to Toms River to catch it landing and put together this video:
