RE: Rosetta's Philae Probe Has Landed On A Comet!

More news. Philae has been awake since early May actually, but didn't manage to make contact to Rosetta. Probably power levels back then were too low, the transmitter need at leat 19 W:

Quoting redflyer (Reply 49):
They successfully landed (meaning it was functioning after the landing) a human made machine on a comet. Think about that for a moment. I would call that a resounding success by any standard or measure; an incredible achievement to be proud of.

I know and agree completely, in this age of being jaded and nothing surprises us, this truly seems incredible and has fascinated me. The fact that we did it all amazes me. The rest is gravy

RE: Rosetta's Philae Probe Has Landed On A Comet!

Quoting GDB (Reply 29):
As it was, Philae was only intended for a baseline mission of around 60 hours, which it pretty much did and sent back the data.

Indeed, hail to Philae for a job well done!

Now we read:

Quote:

The emotional roller-coaster continues — researchers at the European Space Agency (ESA) have lost contact with the comet lander Philae once again. Scientists haven’t heard anything from the intrepid explorer since July 9, and they now fear the probe has shifted in place, potentially damaging it or further blocking its solar panels from absorbing sunlight. With the comet changing rapidly as it approaches the Sun, it’s entirely possible that this is the end of the road for the incredible little ESA lander — but then again, Philae has been in similar situations before. Don’t count the little lander out just yet.

So the saga may have reached its conclusion -- or it may have not!

Interestingly, finding where and how it landed will help extract more out of the data it has sent back.

At least, it puts into context the picture on an earlier post of this thread where the probe photographed its own leg pointing up as it landed sideways.

This is a sad day, we have lost Rosetta. But what a 12 years long adventure. The Rosetta Mission will inspire new generations to reach for the skies, and will give us unprecedented information about the beginning of the solar system and the existence of water on our world.

It' will be also a sad day when Cassini will enter Saturn's atmosphere. A probe that has rewritten history and that i track since 2004.
