Excluding X-planes and rocket planes, I'd say it's either the F-8 Crusader, F-104 Starfighter or F-105 Thunderchief.

As far as operational air breathing aircraft go, it is the MiG-23, followed by the Mirage series (the Kfir C7 being the fastest), then the F-104.

As far as single-engine US operational aircraft are concerned, the F-106A set an FAI-recognized speed record at 1,545 MPH.

MikeN has an interesting entry in the F-8 Crusader. The XF8U-3 Crusader II was a J-75-powered beast with large ventral strakes that probably topped the F-106 record. The -3 Crusader lost out in production to the McDonnel F4H-1 Phantom II, an aircraft with which you are probably familiar.

PS For speed its turbojets, boys, not turbofans. Smaller diameter frontal area, higher gas velocity overall, and a cracklin' afterburner that leaves you with ears like mine. Say what?

Wasn't the Crusader II possible of speeds approaching Mach 3? I remember that being one hell of an aircraft...

There has been an on-going debate between fans of the F-106 and fans of the F-104 on which aircraft was the fastest.

I do believe the low altitude record(<300ft agl) is held by an F-104.
