Referring to NYC-EZE as a United route inherited from Pan Am may be fair but it deserves qualification. Pan Am rarely flew the route nonstop and in most years for most days of the week the flight stopped in Rio - and sometimes in Sao Paulo.

Sao Paulo is a much larger market than Santiago or Buenos Aires. It is also a market than can grow with nonstop service to Australia & New Zealand as tourists and exchange students jump on the easier access. The winner airline is the one that gets to connect the two strong ends first: GRU and SYD.

Azul decided to sit out and not bid. The auction legality is questionable because Avianca does not own the slots. They are distributed by the government. Azul probably had good indication that the auction will be invalidated.

I do not see AA as particularly hostile to other airlines. DL is at least as much. While I lover traveling LH, I think they spare no one, and play a very rough game even with their partners. LH is much more aggressive than any US airline.
