Patrick Quayle has been telling pilots that S24 expansion will be milder than the last few years because of aircraft availability. There will be adds but perhaps just a few. I doubt UA will schedule the incoming 787s for the summer to avoid a situation like this season where routes (EWR-HNL for one)...

With a larger mainline fleet, UA needs more places to do line maintenance. PDX is also convenient to do induction work on new deliveries from Boeing.

UA had 3-4 lines of widebody flying in mods for most of this summer, plus a few 787s are due by next year. BOS-LHR is gone for next year. There will likely be a bit of TATL expansion for S24.

It probably functions like a charter where a group (alumni association, travel agency, etc.) buys a block of seats, but unlike a private charter UA can sell the rest of the seats to the general public.

It is a little strange... the only international flights that connect nicely with the IAD-HND arrivals (which operate essentially as wingtip flights) are SGN, PEK, PVG, GMP and a SQ flight to SIN.
