They can blame the MAX as much as they want, but a lot of these routes were added in response to WW. WW was marketed more towards the US-Europe market and FI was trying to compete and match it...in the end WW failed and now FI is pulling back out of markets that don't make sense with their business...

I was envisioning the 737MAX doing the bulk of Europe and eastern North America flying. It makes sense to utilize the newest aircraft at the highest levels possible. The 737 also covers the majority of Icelandair's routes. Use the 757s for longer missions to North America - saving hours and cycles ...
