Re: 9-11 shutdown

I was still in the USAF and was on a trip as a flight Mech. my TV came on in my room before I woke and the first thing I heard was an aircraft had hit the World trade towers. I'm thinking a small GA because airliners don't fly near big ole towers. Then I saw the second one hit and my jaw dropped. Be...

Re: What can you do with a B.S. in Aviation/Aviation Management??

Aviation degrees, generally speaking are about as worthless as they come, but good enough for checking a box to say you got a degree. Comparable with underwater basket weaving, except without the skill. Well, in my opinion to set oneself ahead of their peers to move ahead a degree is needed in the ...

Re: Electric nose wheels

a common issue withanything new is the concept of diminishing returns. Electric nosewheels sound awesome on a forum. Yes, APU's burn less fuel than the engines taxiing. However, the extra wieght that the aircraft has to drag around while in flight offset those advantages. Since aircraft make money w...

Re: Boeing's FOD problem

I don't want to say what airframe but it was a Boeing and we found a hammer behind the wing fillet panel. It was about 4 or 5 years after the delivery of the aircraft. the only reason we were working there was because there was a SB to check on hydraulic lines for potential chaffing.

Good to know thank you.

I don't know if this helps with your story or not, Orbitial ATK uses a L-1011 to launch the Pegasus rocket into orbit. So They are flying the plane in modern times. It just may not be in the right setting for your story. https://www.nasa.gov/image-feature/pegasus-xl-mated-to-l-1011-stargazer-carrier...

Re: Best cost effective way to refuel aircraft.

I guess to answer the original post. The most cost effective way would be steal it. As free gas is always good the most cost effective, as long as you don't get caught... in all seriousness at major hubs a hydrant setup would probably be best. It saves time and money to have the access to fuel ready...

I feel bad for that recovery team. That is going to be a PITA to get in there and fix the jet and get back out. I"m sure the parking fees are going to be a bit inflated as well.

Re: Discouraged Aircraft Mechanic

That's the conundrum I am in right now. I live almost halfway between Sac and SF. I don't want to fight traffic going to SF and right now it's impossible for me to maintain a healthy work/school/family/life balance with a commute to Sac. So for now I'm a buyer for an aerospace company that's 10 mins...

In all seriousness it takes time. The AMT world is very fluid right now and there is a demand. Hang in there and you'll get something that works for you.

Re: Lion Air 737MAX8 Crashed Jakarta to Pangal Pinang

I'm not familiar with the 737's pitot static systems but I have experience being a maintainer/flight mech for many years. If memory serves the checklist for faulty/irregular airspeed indications is to switch to another Air Data Computer and see if the indications agree. This is on military aircraft ...

I'm looking at this from a security standpoint...are you trying to learn how to transport fuel for nefarious reasons?
Otherwise, go to your local transportation office and ask them how to do it.

Re: What is this thing in the 747 cockpit?

The C-17 has something like this well. theres a clear cylinder attached to the windshield divider. There is a dot on the outside and in the center there is some cross hairs. You just adjust the seat until it lines up. This was important especially with the HUD as it can affect how the data was seen ...

Do not forget that UAV's are becoming more an d more prevalent. If you can get your seizures under control you may be able to go that route as well. I understand you won't be in the air but you are a pilot and I know border control and other agencies are in dire need of remote pilots.

Re: SMF Roaring Out of the Gate in 2018

Another contributing factor for SMF growth is Bay area traffic. I live almost halfway between SFO and SMF, we aren't too picky on the cost of the flight, as SMF tends to be more expensive, we tend to fly out of SMF just for the simple fact that if you land during rush hour in SFO it can double the c...

I was referring to the tires as a source of friction for forward acceleration. In other words the tires do not produce the force to move the aircraft forward.

Re: How do I buy just the engine of a plane?

Well first you'd probably have better luck sourcing one from a graveyard. Transport from the source to where you want to run it is feasible. You would have to mount securely, VERY securely and away from populations, FOD sources, as well as structures or living thing susceptible to exhaust. You would...

Re: The simplicity of aircraft tires

It's not required. The primary concerns with aircraft tires is keeping contact with the surface and removing water, snow, etc out of the way. That's why the tread pattern is usually just a groove. Since they are needed as a source of friction for movement of the aircraft, straight channels is all th...
